Investigators in Cologne, Germany, have launched a probe following an alarming incident involving a 16-year-old girl who was allegedly sexually assaulted by a remote-controlled robot. The event took place outside a fast food establishment in the city on Sunday, October 11, raising significant concerns about the implications of robotics and control in public settings.

According to the North Rhine-Westphalia Police Cologne (NRWPC), the incident occurred at about midnight when the girl was in the company of friends, aged 17 and 18, in front of a fast food restaurant located at the intersection of Palmstrasse and Hohenzollernring. Reports suggest that the 4-foot-tall humanoid robot approached the victim from behind and engaged in inappropriate actions.

The NRWPC described the robot, which reportedly resembles the comic book character Iron Man, as being red and gold in colour. Its appearance was further specified to include a white tank top and black trousers, accessorised with a gold chain. The device is believed to be a model known as the Unitree R1 Air, which is manufactured in China, according to reports from The Times in the UK.
The authorities have also implicated the alleged owner of the robot, a 16-year-old boy, and his 19-year-old accomplice, claiming they filmed the interaction and streamed it live on social media while providing commentary on the incident. The police recognised the seriousness of the circumstance and responded promptly after emergency services were alerted.
Upon responding to the call, officers located the suspects at a nearby junction. They confiscated the robot, which had been placed in the trunk of a Volkswagen vehicle by the suspected assailant. Two mobile phones belonging to the individuals were also taken for examination.
At this stage, both the victim and the suspects remain unnamed as the investigation continues. The NRWPC has stated that they are looking into whether the robot was being controlled remotely and how it was operating during the incident. They have launched an investigation into the matter on grounds of sexual harassment, which has sparked wider discussions about safety and regulation concerning robotics.
The NRWPC confirmed their commitment to thoroughly assess the situation, stating, “The criminal investigation department is now examining how the robot was functioning at the time of the incident and whether someone was deliberately controlling its movements.” This raises significant questions about the ethical use of technology and the responsibility of individuals who operate robotic devices in public spaces.
As authorities continue to investigate, the incident has incited both concern and curiosity regarding the role of technology in everyday life. Questions surrounding accountability and the legal implications of robotic control are now at the forefront of public discourse.
In light of this unsettling event, it is crucial for law enforcement and regulatory bodies to evaluate current policies concerning the operation of such technologies, particularly in relation to safeguarding against potential misuse.
As investigations proceed, further developments are awaited to clarify the circumstances surrounding this unusual and distressing case. The NRWPC has invited anyone with additional information to come forward as they seek to establish a comprehensive understanding of the situation.
