On the eve of their wedding, Tori Sam and Ivan Yen found themselves in an unexpected predicament that could only be described as a scene from a comedy film. Instead of preparing for the joyous day ahead, the couple’s night took a wild turn when they encountered a bat inside their home in Naperville, Illinois.
It was approximately 3 a.m. on 28 August when Sam, aged 28, heard unusual noises emanating from their living space. Having just settled into bed, she was suddenly gripped by fear, thinking a potential intruder had entered their home. “I was so exhausted and in shock,” said Sam. “I was preparing myself mentally to run away, protect myself, or call the cops.” To her astonishment, when she lifted her sleep mask, she discovered a bat swooping around the bedroom.

Not wanting to scare her fiancé, who was fast asleep beside her, Sam reluctantly roused Yen, 29. The startled groom-to-be was, understandably, petrified. “He panicked and hid under the covers for way too long,” Sam recalled with a laugh. After a moment, Yen mustered the courage to open the windows, and the bat eventually exited the bedroom.
The couple’s adventures continued as they quietly tiptoed downstairs where the bat was seen darting around the living room. Armed with a Dyson vacuum attachment, yet overwhelmed with fear, Yen struggled to take action. Meanwhile, Sam took to her phone, researching how best to evict the nocturnal invader. “I found that you could shoo it away with a towel,” she explained.

Following around ten chaotic minutes of chasing, the bat finally made its exit, flying through the kitchen door. The couple documented this unusual event on social media, capturing the stark contrast of their intentions for a peaceful night of sleep juxtaposed with the frantic and chaotic attempts to rid their home of the bat. A video featuring these moments garnered over 650,000 views on Instagram.
In jest, Sam shared a caption that read: “Of all the things I expected to stress about the night before our wedding… a bat was not on the list.” Once the bat had been successfully shooed out, the couple attempted to return to bed but only managed to secure about four hours of rest.
The following morning, a cloud of anxiety loomed over them as they Googled the urgency of rabies vaccinations in light of their late-night encounter. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that rabies shots should be administered as soon as possible after potential exposure, as the disease can lead to fatal consequences if left untreated.
Given that Yen had been asleep during the bat’s visit, there was a possibility he could have been bitten or scratched. Following a brief discussion, he decided to visit the emergency room for a series of preventive injections, receiving a total of five shots as a precaution. Sam, on the other hand, opted to delay her vaccination until after their wedding ceremony at Cantigny Park in Wheaton, where she felt less anxious about her own exposure, having kept a close eye on the bat during the ordeal.
The financial impact of their unexpected detour was significant, amounting to $3,500 per person after insurance, totalling an eye-watering $7,000. “That was a shock to the system,” Sam reflected on the expenses incurred.
Despite the added stress of their early morning A&E visit being far from the ideal wedding preparation, the couple kept their spirits high. “We didn’t know where Ivan could get the shot nor how long it would take to be admitted and actually get the shots,” she recalled. Yet, they managed to maintain a sense of humour about the situation, describing it as “memorable” and perhaps even a sign of good luck.
In the midst of the madness, the couple enjoyed sharing their story online, finding solace in the reactions from others. “It’s fun hearing everyone’s stories and reading the comments,” Sam remarked. “I’m glad we’re alive to tell the tale for sure.”
As they embarked on their new journey as a married couple, it seems that Sam and Yen’s wedding day will forever become a part of their narrative—a tale filled with unexpected twists, laughter, and, above all, resilience.
