Kariem was described by family members as a dedicated educator who loved his profession. Based in Atlanta, he held the position of IT manager at Wesley International Academy, a role he was passionate about, as confirmed by a representative of Atlanta Public Schools (APS). His background also included prior positions as an IT specialist and technology teacher at the same institution, highlighting his commitment to nurturing young minds through technology.
The Atlanta Public Schools issued a heartfelt statement expressing their condolences, stating, “Atlanta Public Schools extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Mr. Kariem. He was a cherished member of the Wesley International Academy and APS families whose presence and impact will be deeply missed by our students, staff, and all those whose lives he touched.” The district conveyed that their thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic loss during this challenging time.
Witness accounts highlight the tragic nature of the event, as reports indicate that Kariem’s son was sitting beside him on the roller coaster when the accident occurred. A witness shared that Kariem’s wife and daughter were not on the ride and were unaware of the unfolding tragedy. The witness noted that Kariem’s son witnessed the entire incident, which added further distress to an already heartbreaking situation.
The Goliath roller coaster is known for its height and speed, reaching up to 200 feet with speeds of 70 miles per hour. The nature of the ride undoubtedly contributed to the severity of the incident, further impacting both the victims and onlookers.
In a statement from Six Flags Over Georgia, a park representative expressed their sorrow regarding the incident. “We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today,” the spokesperson said, offering prayers and support to the deceased man’s family and friends. They assured the public that the park staff and local authorities responded promptly to the situation and confirmed their full cooperation with investigators as they look into the circumstances that led to the tragic event.
As authorities continue their investigation, Kariem’s family has been notified of the incident, though they have yet to issue a public statement on the matter. The Cobb County Police Department is urging anyone with information related to the incident to contact their Major Crimes Unit to aid in the investigation.
This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with amusement rides, leading to heightened concerns regarding safety measures in such environments. As the community mourns the loss of Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, discussions surrounding ride safety and emergency protocols may arise as a crucial future consideration for such parks.
