The trial of former Massachusetts police officer Matthew Farwell is currently underway, with serious accusations surrounding the death of Sandra Birchmore, who was found dead at the age of 23. The charges against Farwell include grooming Birchmore when she was just 13, raping her at 15, and ultimately murdering her after she allegedly revealed to him that she was pregnant and claimed he was the father.

On Tuesday, jurors were presented with surveillance footage that purportedly shows Farwell entering and exiting Birchmore’s condominium on the night of her death. The footage depicts him arriving at the building shortly before 9:30 p.m. on February 1, 2021, wearing a mask and hoodie. Notably, he is seen using the elevator and exiting the building approximately 30 minutes later at 9:56 p.m., after which his wife gave birth to their third child just hours later.

Prosecutors allege that Farwell strangled Birchmore after learning about her pregnancy and then attempted to stage the scene to suggest that she had taken her own life. At the time of the alleged murder, Farwell was serving as an officer with the Stoughton Police Department, where he first encountered Birchmore when she enrolled in the Police Explorer’s Program at the age of 13. The prosecution claims he used his role to groom and eventually sexually abuse her.

According to a detention affidavit obtained by PEOPLE, Farwell allegedly “used his authority and access to groom, sexually exploit, and ultimately sexually abuse then-15-year-old Birchmore.” Reports indicate that he began the alleged sexual abuse shortly before his own wedding, with the abuse purportedly continuing even after Birchmore reached adulthood. Intriguingly, tests conducted in 2025 revealed that Farwell was not the father of the unborn child linked to the case.
For more than three years, Birchmore’s death was ruled a suicide by state officials, who initially determined that she had taken her own life. However, an investigation by the FBI led to a reopening of the case. In August 2024, federal authorities charged Farwell with her murder in a filing to the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts. Subsequently, in September 2024, officials publicly classified Birchmore’s death as a homicide and arrested Farwell.
Farwell has pled not guilty to all charges against him, and his defence argues that Birchmore’s death was, in fact, a suicide. If found guilty, he is facing a potential life sentence in prison. The trial is being held at the John J. Moakley Courthouse in Boston and is expected to last approximately four weeks.
The case has garnered attention not only because of the serious accusations but also due to the nature of Farwell’s former role as a police officer and the implications that arise from the allegations of grooming and sexual abuse.
As the trial unfolds, it has prompted a broader conversation around issues of sexual abuse and the responsibilities of those in positions of authority. While the courtroom proceedings continue, the public eagerly awaits the resolution of this deeply unsettling case, and the jury will ultimately decide Farwell’s fate.
