The incident occurred on the morning of Friday, 9 October, when Greek authorities were alerted that a cruise passenger had gone overboard. The rapid deployment of a local emergency plan signalled the beginning of a thorough search for the missing individual. The operation drew on resources from the Hellenic Coast Guard, which dispatched its rescue vessels, and coordinated efforts with a helicopter from the Hellenic Air Force. Additionally, passing ships in the vicinity were also involved in the search efforts.
The woman’s ordeal came to an end in the early hours of Saturday, 10 October, when she was located by the cargo ship MSC Rossella III, which was assisting in the operation. Footage released by the Hellenic Coast Guard captures the dramatic moment of her rescue, showing the woman floating in a lifebuoy in the dark sea, illuminated by the crew’s lights.

In the video, crew members of the cargo ship can be heard inquiring about her condition as they throw down a rope. The woman, visibly moving as the vessel drew nearer, managed to grab hold of the rope and pull herself to safety. Upon retrieval, she was given immediate first aid on board the ship before being transported to the port of Katakolo on mainland Greece.
Once ashore, she was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for medical examination and monitoring. The Katakolo Port Authority is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, evoking concerns about safety on cruise vessels.
Reports indicate that the cruise ship from which she fell was Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas, although the exact name of the vessel has not been explicitly confirmed in the officials’ communications. In response to media inquiries, a representative from Royal Caribbean acknowledged the situation and stated that they were actively cooperating with the authorities while focusing on the wellbeing of the affected individual’s loved ones.
“Our Care Team is actively providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time,” the company stated, though they refrained from disclosing further details for privacy reasons.
At the time of the incident, the Odyssey of the Seas was completing its scheduled itinerary. The ship has since set sail on a different seven-night cruise that departed from Rome on Sunday, 11 October. This voyage will include stops in various locations such as Sicily, Naples, Santorini, and Mykonos, and is expected to return to Rome by 18 October.
As the investigation into this unfortunate event unfolds, questions about safety measures on board and protocols regarding passenger wellbeing during excursions at sea will likely come to the forefront.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers present even in seemingly controlled environments like cruise ships, highlighting the importance of prompt response and effective search and rescue operations in maritime emergencies.
