A couple from Southern California is sharing their harrowing experience after their young daughter fell seriously ill due to contracting E. coli from unpasteurised goat milk. Emily and Josh Marris hope to shed light on the risks associated with consuming raw dairy, particularly its potential dangers to young children.

The Marris family, who place a strong emphasis on nutrition, typically prepare meals at home using fresh ingredients sourced from local farmers. However, their lives took a drastic turn in June 2025 when their 17-month-old daughter, Brooklyn, began to show symptoms of what they thought was a stomach bug. Initially, they were advised by their family doctor to keep her hydrated and monitor her condition at home.

Unfortunately, Brooklyn’s health rapidly deteriorated. After a day and a half of feeling unwell, she began vomiting dark bile, prompting Emily and Josh to seek medical assistance in the emergency room. There, medical staff suspected it was merely a stomach bug and sent them home. The couple, however, felt compelled to keep Brooklyn at the hospital for further evaluation and intravenous fluids.
Within the hour, doctors at the hospital diagnosed Brooklyn with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a condition linked to E. coli infection that can cause severe kidney damage. In fact, the onset of HUS is often triggered by Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). Emily and Josh learned that Brooklyn’s illness stemmed from the raw goat milk they had been giving her intermittently over the past six months.
Raw milk is milk that has not undergone pasteurisation, a process deemed vital by health organisations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Pasteurisation effectively kills harmful germs, protecting vulnerable groups including children and pregnant women from foodborne illnesses. Despite this, they had initially been persuaded by a supplier that the raw milk was safe for consumption.
In the wake of Brooklyn’s diagnosis, the couple expressed their frustrations about the misinformation they had encountered while researching raw milk. “We were educated too late,” Emily admitted, noting that the severe risks did not appear prominently in their online searches. This lack of accessible information led them to make choices they would later regret.
As Brooklyn’s state worsened, she was intubated and placed on life support. Over the course of a seven-hour procedure, she underwent several dialysis treatments and transfusions. Both parents vividly recall the fear that engulfed their lives as they faced the possibility of losing their daughter.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Josh stated, “Time stood still for us. Everything in our lives had completely stopped.” Emily echoed these sentiments, sharing that the experience left their family deeply traumatized. Thankfully, over the past year, Brooklyn has made significant strides in her recovery. Currently approaching her third birthday, she has been able to participate in physical and speech therapy, although lingering effects remain, including night terrors.
With a desire to inform and protect other families, the Marrises are determined to raise awareness about the potential dangers of raw milk. They emphasise that their circumstances could happen to any well-meaning parent. “We love our children and want to feed them well,” Emily remarked. “This can happen to anybody that is a good, loving, intelligent, kind parent.”
Josh added, “Never in my wildest imagination would I have thought that consuming raw milk, or milk of any sort, for a child could lead to death.” He hopes their story will inspire others to reconsider these choices and to seek better information about the safety of their food.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has also addressed the risks associated with raw dairy consumption, recently highlighting the higher incidence of related illnesses in children. Dr Adam Ratner, a lead author of a new policy statement, stated, “Nearly half of illnesses caused by raw dairy consumption occur in people under age 20, and a significant share of those cases are in children under 5.” He urged for the banning of raw milk sales, asserting that pasteurisation remains the safest and most effective way to protect families.
Experts emphasise that while some families believe raw milk is more nutritious or natural, scientific evidence does not support these claims. Instead, pasteurised products deliver the same essential nutrients without exposing consumers to harmful pathogens.
As the Marris family continues their journey of recovery, they remain steadfast in their mission to prevent another family from experiencing a similar ordeal. Their hope is that, by sharing their story, they can help to inform others about the severe and possibly life-threatening consequences of consuming unpasteurised dairy products.
