Collin Gosselin has spoken out regarding the alleged mistreatment he experienced at the hands of his mother, Kate Gosselin, during a recent interview on the On Purpose podcast hosted by Jay Shetty. This appearance comes ahead of the release of his memoir, *In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood*, which is set to be published on October 13. In his revelations, Collin details what he describes as abuse, including solitary confinement in a basement room.

In the episode aired on October 12, Collin claimed that his mother subjected him to both physical and verbal abuse. He recalled a specific instance where Kate purportedly locked him in a room built in their basement, which was designed not merely as a temporary measure but as a means for her to silence him. Collin described the room as being constructed with cinder block walls and a cement floor, indicating that it was an intentional effort by his mother to isolate him and prevent him from sharing his experiences.
Despite Collin’s allegations, Kate Gosselin has publicly denied any wrongdoing. In earlier comments made to the media, her attorney, Richard Puleo, suggested that she acted out of concern for her family’s well-being and did not intend to cause harm to her son. Following these claims, The Sun reported on additional allegations made by Collin regarding his treatment and what he described as unjust experiences within the family.
During his podcast appearance, Collin revealed that he possesses documentation from Fairmount, the mental health facility where he was admitted when he was just shy of twelve years old. He produced a document containing notes from a registered nurse, which he claims were written at the behest of his mother. According to these notes, Kate Gosselin allegedly acknowledged locking Collin in a room and stated, “He always tells wild stories.” She purportedly implied that this arrangement was approved by a psychiatrist.
Collin expressed that this documentation serves as proof of the abuse he has long claimed to have suffered. He asserted that it is implausible to believe any mental health professional would endorse such treatment of a child. He emphasised that his mother’s actions were driven by a desire to keep him silent and hidden rather than for any truly protective motive.
Further detailing his childhood ordeal, Collin described a harrowing encounter with Child Protective Services (CPS) during which he attempted to reveal the extent of the abuse he faced. He recounted how he informed CPS that his mother had zip-tied his wrists and ankles. However, he was disappointed to learn that the investigation deemed the allegations “unfounded”. Collin conveyed his fear that speaking up could worsen his situation, leading him to remain silent when he should have sought help.
He reflected on how his mother would behave when the family was filmed for their reality shows, claiming Kate would present a facade of caring and concern. This mask would slip away during private interactions, which Collin described as emotionally and physically challenging. He recounted being homeschooled after being pulled out of school and suggested that these were some of the darkest times of his life as they allowed his mother to control him more intensely.
During a separate interview with Good Morning America, Collin elaborated on the label of the “difficult” child, suggesting that his resistance to the family’s reality television life made him a target in his mother’s eyes. He believes his presence posed a threat to the constructed narrative that Kate had built around her family.
Collin’s memoir is aimed at shedding light on child abuse issues and supporting other victims. He expressed a strong motivation to advocate for abuse survivors and bring about change within the system. In his discussions, he indicated that he is not afraid of potential legal repercussions from his mother and has every confidence in the evidence he possesses concerning his claims.
For those who suspect or are aware of child abuse, Collin’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of speaking out. He concluded his interview with a call for individuals to reach out for help and utilise resources available to them, such as child advocacy hotlines. Speaking about his own experiences, Collin Gosselin is determined to use his voice to advocate for children who cannot yet share their stories.
