According to the Georgia Department of Public Safety, the events unfolded just before midnight when a trooper attempted to pull over a speeding Audi on Interstate 20. The vehicle, identified as driven by 33-year-old Cameron Kemp from Covington, was reportedly travelling at more than 110 mph in a 60 mph zone. Witnesses observed the Audi moving erratically through traffic without its headlights on.

As the trooper activated his emergency lights to signal a traffic stop, Kemp initially pulled over but then accelerated away from the scene, prompting a police pursuit. The chase continued eastbound along the interstate, with the driver exiting at Candler Road before re-entering the highway. However, Kemp lost control of the car at Wesley Chapel Road, leading to a collision with a guardrail and subsequently striking several other vehicles.

First responders quickly arrived at the scene to assist those injured in the pile-up, which involved a total of ten vehicles. Tragically, an infant named Kalayia Tolbert was in one of the impacted cars. Despite efforts to provide medical assistance, she succumbed to her injuries soon after being admitted to the hospital.
Cameron Kemp was also transported to a medical facility but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Authorities confirmed that he was operating the vehicle with a suspended driver’s licence and had outstanding arrest warrants for a probation violation and a previous court appearance. It was noted that he had a history of incarceration for aggravated battery.
Georgia state officials expressed their profound sorrow over the tragic loss of Kalayia, stating that the devastation of losing a child is incomprehensible. They extended their thoughts and condolences to the infant’s family and acknowledged the wider emotional impact the incident had on other motorists, families, and emergency responders involved.
In a statement, the Georgia Department of Public Safety articulated the importance of protecting public safety on the roads. “A motorist travelling at extreme speeds, without headlights on dark roadways, and recklessly manoeuvring through traffic presents an immediate danger to everyone sharing the roadway,” they said. The department reaffirmed its commitment to thorough investigations surrounding such incidents to prevent future tragedies.
The Georgia State Patrol has since launched an inquiry into the circumstances of the crash, enlisting their Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team to analyse the events leading up to the tragedy. Officials stressed the importance of ensuring that all factors are considered so that lessons can be learned and appropriate measures can be put in place.
As authorities work to investigate the crash, they have appealed to the public to keep the Tolbert family in their thoughts during this heart-wrenching time. The state ministry acknowledged that no law enforcement engagement could ever outweigh the profound grief experienced by those affected by the loss of a child.
This tragic occurrence serves as a sobering reminder of the potential consequences associated with reckless driving and the urgent need for responsible road behaviour. With the investigation ongoing, the hope remains that this incident will prompt a renewed focus on promoting road safety and preventing such devastating losses in the future.
