A 29-year-old woman from Tallahassee, Florida, has been charged with six counts of child neglect following the discovery of six children living in what authorities have described as “unlivable” conditions. Jamie Jakes was arrested on Sunday, 4 October, after police found the unsupervised children in her home, revealing concerning levels of neglect.

The situation came to light when an officer observed a car swerving towards a petrol station in the early hours and narrowly avoiding one of the children. After the near incident, the child was taken back to a home where three other children were found, with two of them dressed only in damp diapers and another wearing just trousers. This alarming scene prompted further investigation, leading the officers to discover even more children within the residence.

Upon arrival at the home, officers found three additional children lying on a bed without any clothing. Remarkably, the children appeared to have been left unsupervised when police entered the property. According to a probable cause affidavit, as the officers further assessed the living conditions, they described the home as unfit for habitation, with the floors contaminated by both human waste and urine.
The report highlighted additional neglect, stating that there was a lack of food and proper clothing for the children. The police noted that attempts to locate suitable clothes for the children yielded nothing more than items that were wet and reeked of mildew. The officer who documented the scene remarked on the unsanitary conditions, stating, “In the living room, I found what appeared to be feces and urine on the floor,” alongside piles of trash and spoiled food scattered throughout the residence.
In their investigation, authorities learned from one of the children that they had been left alone for an approximate duration of two hours while Jakes had gone to the store. However, police suggested that the children may have been left without supervision significantly longer, possibly starting the previous evening. The children were reported to have been sleeping together on a full-size mattress situated in the main bedroom.
Jakes was apprehended upon her return to the property at around 6 a.m. She reportedly revealed to the authorities that she had been paying a friend from the neighbourhood $150 a week to care for the children between Thursday and Sunday. However, when police questioned this friend about the arrangement, she denied that any such agreement existed.
During her interview, Jakes claimed that her house had been clean just one day prior to its inspection, but law enforcement officials noted that the age of the waste found did not align with her statement. The affidavit outlined that she had “willfully failed or omitted to provide the children with the care, supervision, and services necessary to maintain the children’s physical and mental health.” The neglect was compounded by a failure to ensure the children had access to food, nutrition, clothing, shelter, supervision, and necessary medical services.
This shocking case highlights the ongoing issue of child neglect, prompting local authorities to call for greater vigilance in safeguarding children in potential crisis situations. The Tallahassee Police Department has been contacted for further comments on the incident, and the investigation remains active as they ensure the wellbeing of the children involved.
