President Donald Trump has declared that Katie Zacharia will succeed Karoline Leavitt as the White House press secretary, following Leavitt’s recent resignation to prioritise her family life. The announcement came on 9 October, when Trump made the news public via his social media platform, Truth Social.

Leavitt, who became the youngest individual ever to serve as White House press secretary at the age of 27, announced her departure on 12 August. The decision was attributed to her desire to spend more time raising her young children, a sentiment that Trump fully supported. Following Leavitt’s exit, Zacharia was appointed to the role. Trump’s post on Truth Social praised her as “outstanding” in her previous position as Senior Communications Advisor to Truth Social and expressed confidence in her capabilities as press secretary.

Zacharia has made a name for herself in conservative commentary and has previously held a position within the Department of Homeland Security. She is also known for her appearances on Fox News and her involvement with Fix California, an organisation aimed at furthering conservative agendas within the state.
Upon announcing Leavitt’s departure, Trump lauded her contributions, stating, “Karoline has been one of the best White House Press Secretaries in the History of the Office.” He concluded by expressing gratitude for her service and indicated that she would continue to be a significant advisor within the Republican Party following her resignation.
Leavitt herself has spoken fondly of her time in office, describing it as “the honour and adventure of a lifetime.” In a message shared on social media, she expressed her appreciation for the opportunities afforded to her during her tenure as press secretary. She particularly thanked Trump for allowing her to represent him and communicate on his behalf from the podium at the White House.
The decision to step down was particularly influenced by the birth of her daughter, Viviana, earlier this year. Leavitt emphasised that since returning to work after maternity leave, she felt torn between her responsibilities as press secretary and her commitment to being a present mother for her young children. She noted that it was a “bittersweet” decision, acknowledging the sacrifices made by her family, as well as the First Family and the administration.
Leavitt’s appointment as press secretary in January 2025 marked a significant milestone in her career, as she became a prominent face within Trump’s administration during his second term. Having first entered the political landscape immediately after graduating from college in 2019, Leavitt progressed within the White House office, eventually serving in various communications roles before her historic appointment.
Interestingly, during Trump’s first term, four individuals held the position of press secretary, signifying the challenges and pressures that come with such a prominent role. In contrast, Leavitt was the only person to serve throughout Trump’s second presidential term.
As Zacharia steps into her new role, there is widespread anticipation about her approach to press relations and her capacity to navigate the complex dynamics between the media, the American public, and the administration. Trump’s endorsement and confidence in her abilities suggest that he expects her to build upon Leavitt’s legacy while potentially introducing her own style of communication.
As the White House transitions to this new chapter, all eyes will be on how Zacharia will embrace the challenges ahead. With the ongoing scrutiny of the administration from various media outlets, her effectiveness in the role as press secretary will be pivotal in shaping the narrative surrounding Trump’s presidency moving forward.
