Sophia Laforteza is poised to return to KATSEYE in January 2027, following a five-month hiatus to focus on her mental health. The announcement was made by her management team, Hybe and Geffen, on Thursday, October 8. Despite her upcoming return, Laforteza will miss the group’s North American tour and promotional activities scheduled for the remainder of 2026.

In a statement, the management expressed their support for Laforteza’s decision to prioritise her health and well-being. “We are pleased to share that Sophia will resume group activities with KATSEYE beginning the first week of January 2027,” the statement read. It further acknowledged the group’s commitment to supporting members prioritising their mental well-being.

Laforteza, who is 23 years old, initially announced her decision to step back from her role with KATSEYE in August due to the need for a mental health break. This decision has drawn significant attention, especially since she is not the only member to take a temporary pause for health reasons. Earlier in the year, group member Manon Bannerman similarly announced a break, citing her own health concerns, but has not yet confirmed when she intends to return.
The impact of mental health on performers and particularly young artists has been a growing topic of discussion in the entertainment industry. In a June cover story for Allure magazine, Laforteza spoke about the importance of supporting fellow members. She noted that the door would always remain open for Bannerman to return at her own pace. “Because we did announce that it is about her well-being, it’s not our place or anybody else’s to rush her,” Laforteza commented, highlighting the group’s commitment to respecting individual timelines in mental wellness.
The group faced a setback shortly after Laforteza announced her break when another member, Megan Skiendiel, sustained an ankle sprain, resulting in KATSEYE pulling out of a planned performance at Olivia Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields festival on August 29. Such incidents highlight the importance of health and safety, underscoring how physical injuries can impact both individual members and group activities.
The support from fans, collectively known as EYEKONS, has been a crucial aspect of Laforteza’s journey. In their announcement, the group expressed gratitude towards their supporters for demonstrating patience and understanding during this period. “Thank you for standing by her, and we look forward to celebrating her return with you in the new year,” the statement concluded, showcasing the strong bond between the group and their fanbase.
KATSEYE, which comprises Laforteza, along with fellow members Daniela Avanzini, Lara Raj, Yoonchae Jeung, Manon Bannerman, and Megan Skiendiel, rose to fame after forming on the reality competition series “Dream Academy.” Since their debut EP in 2024, they have garnered significant recognition, earning nominations for two Grammy Awards, including one for Best New Artist.
As KATSEYE prepares for the new chapter ahead in 2027, their ongoing commitment to member well-being may set a precedent in the music industry about the importance of mental health. The return of Laforteza not only represents a personal journey of recovery but also signals a broader conversation about prioritising mental wellness among artists in an often demanding environment.
With anticipation building for her return, Laforteza’s fans and the music industry at large are hopeful that her experience will resonate positively, underscoring the significance of mental health in the entertainment field. The future of KATSEYE seems promising, and their upcoming projects are expected to reflect a resilient spirit, inspired by the journey each member has undertaken.
