The University of Maryland Police Department (UMPD) confirmed on Thursday, 8 October, that Dilan Shaan Ashar, a 22-year-old student reported missing earlier this month, has been located safe and well. His disappearance had sparked significant concern and widespread efforts from both local authorities and the university community.

Dilan was last seen on 2 October at approximately 2:30 a.m. in the Terrapin Trail Parking Garage on the university’s campus. Following his absence, the UMPD swiftly initiated a search operation, mobilising nearly 50 first responders, nine search dogs, and a drone to scour the vicinity for any signs of the missing student.
In a joint statement released by University President Darryll J. Pines and UMPD Chief David B. Mitchell, the college announced the positive news. “Tonight we write to share good news: Dilan has been found!” they affirmed, thanking the community for their extensive support and involvement in the search for Ashar. The officials acknowledged the distress that had enveloped the campus during those turbulent days, underlining the importance of mental health resources available to students and staff.
As the search intensified, Dilan’s family released a heartfelt video appeal, urging anyone with information about his whereabouts to come forward. “Dilan, we love you so much, and we hope you are safe,” his mother expressed in an emotional message shared via the UMPD. She called for Dilan to contact them or emergency services, assuring him that they were waiting for his return.
The family revealed that the last contact with Dilan occurred on the evening of 1 October, and at the time of his disappearance, he did not possess his phone, wallet, or identification, which heightened concerns for his wellbeing. This lack of personal belongings raised alarm bells, prompting the UMPD to undertake a rigorous and systematic search of the area.
On the morning of Sunday, 4 October, the police force executed a thorough search of approximately 110 acres around the parking garage, employing various resources including drones to assist in locating Ashar. The efforts were a testament to the collaboration between different emergency services and the community, showcasing the collective concern for the student’s safety.
Ashar’s mother described her son as a “kind, thoughtful young man who cares deeply about people.” Her remarks painted a vivid picture of Dilan, describing his love for sports and cooking, traits that endeared him to those who knew him. The emotional connection and dedication of his family shone through as they reached out to the community for support.
The successful resolution of this missing person case brought relief not only to Ashar’s family but also to the wider university community, who had rallied together to assist in the search efforts. President Pines and Chief Mitchell’s message of gratitude encapsulated the spirit of unity and support that emerged during this challenging time.
In light of the incident, university officials emphasised the importance of mental health, prompting community members to make use of the available resources such as the University Counseling Center, the Faculty Staff Assistance Program, and spiritual care services offered by the university chaplains.
The discovery of Dilan Shaan Ashar marks a significant moment of relief for all involved, affirming the power of communal effort and compassion when faced with crisis. His safety serves as a reminder of the supportive environment fostered within educational institutions and the enduring bonds that connect individuals in times of uncertainty.
