Margaret Qualley has expressed her excitement for the upcoming remake of the 1981 horror classic, “Possession,” during a special screening of her latest film, “Love of Your Life.” The new version is set to be released in cinemas on June 11, 2027, and aims to reimagine the iconic story that captivated audiences over four decades ago. Qualley, who stars alongside Callum Turner, Diego Calva, and Paul Dano, will take on a role that pays homage to the original film’s lead actress, Isabelle Adjani.

At the red-carpet event in New York City, on October 6, Qualley shared her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I loved making that movie. I’m really excited about it.” Photographs from the set of “Possession” revealed Qualley in a dramatic all-black costume, which included long sleeves, as she filmed intense scenes involving running and screaming in the streets. The film is helmed by Parker Finn, known for his work on “Smile,” who brings a fresh perspective to this revered title.

Qualley conveyed her admiration for Finn, noting his directorial vision: “I really believe in Parker Finn, the director.” She also spoke about the significant influence Adjani had on her decision to take on the role. “Isabelle Adjani means so much to me,” she remarked. The original “Possession,” starring Adjani and Sam Neill, delves into the psychological turmoil of a woman experiencing an emotional breakdown amid her tumultuous divorce.
Adjani, now 71, has previously acknowledged Qualley’s components of resemblance to her. The two women met at a dinner gathering, where Adjani noted that Qualley “looked more like me than her mother,” referring to the actress Andie MacDowell. In a May interview at the Cannes Film Festival, Adjani emphasised Qualley’s remarkable talent and shared her perspective on the film’s enduring mystique. “Possession has achieved cult status,” she stated, recognising the film’s unique blend of horror and mysticism.
The decision to create a modern remake of “Possession” comes amid a resurgence of interest in cult films, with contemporary filmmakers exploring their distinct narratives through a modern lens. Adjani defended the notion of remaking such a revered piece, stating, “Today, the new cinematic extremism… has led to remakes of films like Possession, with a certain enlightened opportunism. Why not?”
In 2024, it was initially reported that Finn, along with Robert Pattinson, were collaborating on the project. Although Pattinson will not star in the remake, he remains involved as a producer, contributing to its development behind the scenes.
Before “Possession” hits the big screen, audiences can catch Qualley in her current film, “Love of Your Life.” The narrative follows her character, a nurse who relocates to Portugal following a heart-wrenching breakup. The film features an impressive ensemble cast, including Aaron Pierre, Gabriel Basso, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Catherine Keener. Qualley expressed her gratitude for collaborating with such talented actors, praising their unique contributions and on-set chemistry.
In discussing her co-stars, Qualley said, “I was so lucky to be able to work with such talented actors. Gabe is so present and spontaneous.” She further appreciated each actor’s qualities, stating, “Aaron has this elegance and grace to him, and Patrick is just such a good, sweet guy.” Her reflections on the cast underscore a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect that characterized the filming process.
“Love of Your Life” is currently in theatres and is scheduled to stream on Prime Video beginning on October 14, providing audiences a chance to experience Qualley’s talent in a different context ahead of her much-anticipated role in “Possession.”
As the release date for “Possession” approaches, interest builds around how the remake will reinterpret the original’s themes of psychological horror and emotional turmoil, as well as how Qualley’s performance will resonate with both new viewers and fans of the classic film. The upcoming months will surely bring more insights and promotional activities as the film nears its release, drawing attention to this intriguing blend of nostalgia and fresh storytelling.
