In a tragic turn of events, Mark Cain has been charged with the murder of his wife, Hannah Cain, a well-respected physician known professionally as Dr. Hannah Terry. Hannah was found dead at their residence in Dersingham, Norfolk, on Sunday, 4 October. The shocking incident unfolded just two miles from King Charles III’s Sandringham estate.
During a preliminary hearing at King’s Lynn Crown Court on Thursday, 8 October, the prosecution presented disturbing allegations against Mark Cain, 45. The court was informed that he is accused of fatally assaulting his wife with an axe, in addition to strangling her. The case has garnered significant media attention, partly due to Hannah’s links with the royal family, having reportedly cared for members, including Queen Camilla.

According to reports, the couple’s three children—aged 13, 11, and 8—were asleep upstairs at the time of the alleged incident, alongside two of their friends, aged 10 and 8, who were staying over. The gravity of the situation has been magnified by the presence of innocent children in close proximity to the events that transpired.
Prosecutor Steven Ball outlined the findings from an autopsy, which confirmed that Hannah, also aged 45, succumbed to blunt force trauma, specifically to the head, and suffered significant neck injuries. She was discovered unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom, raising urgent questions regarding the circumstances leading up to her untimely death.
Mark Cain had originally contacted the authorities to report an alleged burglary at their home. Upon police arrival, he was found with cuts on his own body and claimed he had a confrontation with an intruder. However, these claims have since been scrutinised in light of the evidence emerging from the investigation.
The court proceedings resulted in an adjournment until a pre-trial hearing, which is scheduled for 3 December at Norwich Crown Court. During the hearing, Mark appeared via video link and displayed signs of distress, which included sniffing and wiping his face. He has been remanded in custody pending further developments in the case.
The community has been left in mourning, particularly within the medical community where Hannah worked at Grimston Medical Centre. The centre was briefly closed following the news of her death but has since reopened. A message on its website expressed profound sorrow at the loss of “a much-loved and highly respected colleague.” It described Hannah as an exceptional doctor who brought kindness and positivity into the lives of her patients and colleagues.
In a heartfelt statement released through the police, Hannah’s family expressed their devastation over the loss. They characterised her as a loving mother, daughter, sister, and friend, underscoring their pride in her character and dedication to her patients. The tribute exemplifies the impact she had on not only her family but also the broader community.
As investigations continue, the case has sparked conversations about domestic violence and its tragic consequences. Should anyone find themselves in a similar situation, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24/7 for support and assistance.
The shocking nature of this incident serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and hidden challenges that can exist within families. As the legal proceedings unfold, the community’s thoughts will remain with Hannah’s family, particularly her children, who are now left to navigate life without their mother.
