Residents of a North Carolina neighbourhood are on high alert following the escape of a pet boa constrictor. The Hoke County Animal Shelter (HCAS) announced on its Facebook page on Monday, 6th October, that the snake, measuring between six and seven feet in length, went missing in the vicinity of Calloway Road and Summer Lane.

The shelter did not specify how the boa escaped, but urged local residents to remain vigilant. It advised that anyone who spots the snake should contact animal control rather than try to catch it themselves. The owner of the boa constrictor expressed concern for their pet, describing it as a “very docile” animal.

The HCAS emphasised the importance of maintaining a safe distance from the escaped boa and encouraged parents to keep their children and pets away from the area. “No, this is not a joke,” the shelter stated, underscoring the seriousness of the situation.
In the comments section of their social media announcement, several community members offered insight on the behaviour of snakes in such situations. One user suggested that the boa would likely slow down during the evening and advised searching corners of properties and garages, as the reptile would be seeking warmth. Another commenter noted that boa constrictors typically do not roam far from their original location, prompting locals to check nearby premises closely.
Boa constrictors are non-venomous snakes native to Central and South America and are known for their ability to adapt to various environments, though they typically thrive in tropical rainforests. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute highlighted that these snakes possess unique patterns and colours that help them camouflage seamlessly into their surroundings.
Experts assert that incidents of boa constrictors attacking humans are exceedingly rare. According to the zoo, the size of human beings, even infants, generally makes them unsuitable as prey for these reptiles.
Despite the unfortunate escape of this boa constrictor, such occurrences are not unprecedented. In 2024, a similar incident was reported in Shapleigh, Maine, where a sheriff’s deputy discovered an escaped boa constrictor on the road. After securing the snake, authorities coordinated with the Maine Warden Service, which is tasked with protecting the state’s natural resources, to retrieve the snake and locate its owner.
As the search continues for the boa constrictor in Hoke County, local residents are reminded to report any sightings to animal control promptly. The animal shelter is committed to ensuring the safe return of the snake to its owner and urges the community to stay calm and informed during this unusual occurrence.
It is essential for the public to remember that, while boa constrictors are typically non-aggressive, caution should still be exercised. By avoiding contact and alerting professionals to any sightings, residents can help maintain safety within the neighbourhood until the situation is resolved.
