Extreme adventurer Ash Dykes is forging ahead on his journey down the Sangha River, which spans 434 miles from Nola in the Central African Republic to Mossaka in the Republic of the Congo. However, his expedition has not been without its challenges. Upon arriving in Cameroon to commence his overland trek, Dykes and his crew faced significant logistical obstacles, including missing luggage and visa complications.

As Dykes made his way from London to Cameroon, he encountered further hurdles that complicated the beginning of his adventure. He took to social media to share updates with his followers, revealing that he and his team, which includes a videographer and a local guide, discovered that essential equipment—tents and kayak pumps—was not with them upon arrival.
In a video update, Dykes detailed the trials the crew faced while attempting to cross the border into the Central African Republic. He expressed frustration over the delays they incurred, stating, “We’ve been travelling for four days. There’re been hiccups, there’ve been a lot of different obstacles—officers and checkpoints.”
The team’s visa denial upon arrival required them to take an alternative route, which added to their time on the road. Dykes explained that the necessary paperwork for entry had been specific to air travel and was no longer suitable for overland crossings. He noted that the officials they encountered were understanding, emphasising that it was not their fault.
The situation took a turn for the worse as a storm rolled in just as the group reached the official office to process their new visa. With lightning flashing around them, Dykes and his crew had to make a two-hour upstream journey on a motorboat in pitch darkness and heavy rain.
Despite these difficulties, Dykes and his team successfully reached Nola, signalling that their journey down the Sangha River is ready to commence. He reassured his concerned followers, acknowledging the challenges, and reinforcing that such obstacles were expected on a mission of this nature. “We always knew that it was gonna be hard to get onto the river or to get to Nola. We always knew that it was gonna be an adventure,” he remarked.
With the risks of the trek ahead, the adventurer remains focused and resolute. He announced plans to set off early the following morning, stating that he would need time to prepare the inflatable kayaks. Dykes described the river conditions in Nola as narrow, murky, and flowing rapidly, hinting at the challenges that lie ahead as he prepares to launch his expedition.
This journey represents the first of six planned challenges under Dykes’ latest initiative, “Project Six.” Following his exploration of the Sangha River, Dykes has teased that his next project will take place in drastically colder conditions, with temperatures plummeting to around 5°F.
In a past interview, Dykes shared some of the dangers he anticipates encountering while navigating through Africa. His concerns span a range of wildlife, including crocodiles, hippos, and forest elephants, as well as the risks posed by diseases such as malaria and dengue fever. He has expressed the seriousness of the situation, highlighting the need for vigilance against parasites and other threats in the untamed wilderness.
With a substantial following of over one million on TikTok and nearly 600,000 on Instagram, Dykes has leveraged social media to document his expedition. As he faces the unpredictable nature of his adventure, his engaged audience is kept informed of both the triumphs and obstacles he encounters along the way.
As Ash Dykes prepares to navigate the unpredictable waters of the Sangha River, he remains optimistic about the road ahead. Despite the setbacks, he is committed to pushing forward and embracing the challenges that come with exploring one of Africa’s great rivers. The adventurer’s resilience reflects a spirit of determination, and those following along can anticipate a thrilling account of his journey as it unfolds.
