Dominic Cooper and Amanda Seyfried recently shared a moment of nostalgia at the Hamptons International Film Festival, reflecting on their iconic roles in the beloved “Mamma Mia!” films. The duo, who starred together in the original 2008 musical and its 2018 sequel, engaged in light-hearted conversation about the possibility of a third instalment while attending the festival on 3 October 2026. Seyfried was there to showcase her latest project, “The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd,” while Cooper presented his film “The Lightkeeper.”

The reunion comes years after Cooper and Seyfried, who dated for a period during the filming of “Mamma Mia!,” parted ways in 2011. Despite their romantic history, they have maintained a friendship which shone through during their encounter at the festival, where they even posed for cheerful photographs together.

In an interview prior to the premiere of his film, Cooper expressed his surprise at the long-lasting impact that the “Mamma Mia!” franchise has had on audiences. Reflecting on his time working with talented actors like Meryl Streep and Colin Firth, he remarked, “I didn’t see the big picture at the time,” but added that he now appreciates the “extraordinary” ways in which the film resonates with viewers.

Notably, Cooper has received numerous messages from parents who fondly recall watching “Mamma Mia!” repeatedly with their children. He noted, “Children watched it every day, five times a day! The parents feel very connected as they remember their children being young.” He also revealed that some fans found solace in the film during difficult times, sharing that it provided comfort to those spending their last days with loved ones. This, according to Cooper, highlights the film’s significant and uplifting legacy.
Amidst anecdotes from their time filming, both actors shared their enthusiasm for a third “Mamma Mia!” movie. Cooper expressed his eagerness to reunite with the cast, stating, “I would love to make number three, which is constantly being spoken about.” His sentiments align with Seyfried’s, who has frequently voiced her desire for another sequel, although she acknowledged there is currently no confirmed plan in motion.
Cooper, in a light-hearted mood, mentioned that he had even conceptualised a storyline for the sequel. Although he jested about initially getting elements of the existing storylines mixed up, he shared an amusing idea set on a Greek island involving characters rekindling their romance at a wedding. “They better hurry up, because we’re all getting old,” he jokingly added, underscoring the need for the film to be made sooner rather than later.
Seyfried shared a similar sentiment regarding their friendship, describing Cooper as “hilarious” and expressing warm feelings towards him despite their lives taking them in different directions. “When you’re with somebody for a long time when you’re younger, it just kind of evolves into this familial, nice, soft kind of bond,” she reflected when asked about their relationship.
In terms of the potential for a third film, Seyfried has been vocal in her hopes, stating, “I kept wanting to say yes and put it into the universe, manifest a Mamma Mia! 3, but all I can say is tick tock.” This reflects the measure of anticipation among fans eager to see what a new chapter would bring for the characters they love.
Furthermore, producer Judy Craymer commented in 2023 that there is already a concept for the next film. She acknowledged that producing a sequel often takes time, but expressed optimism for the franchise’s future, noting that convincing ABBA members Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson to participate always takes persuasion.
While fans await good news about a potential continuation of the saga, both actors are making their mark with their current projects. Cooper’s performance in “The Lightkeeper” portrays an Irish lighthouse keeper grappling with grief, while Seyfried stars in “The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd,” where she plays a woman who forms a romantic bond with an incarcerated individual during creative writing classes at an Oklahoma prison.
As of now, neither film has a confirmed release date, leaving audiences to look forward to both their new works and the possibility of another adventure in the sunny world of “Mamma Mia!”
