A tragic incident occurred at Shenandoah Park in Miami, resulting in the death of a 13-year-old boy, Olvin Cabrera Valladares. The incident took place on Friday, September 25, when Olvin was found with his shirt caught on a screw inside a playground slide. Attempts to save him were made by bystanders and paramedics, but he was ultimately declared brain dead six days later.

Olvin’s mother, Estefanía Valladares, shared the heartbreaking story of her son’s last moments. He had set off for school that morning, as was routine, always saying goodbye with affection. Instead of attending school, Olvin chose to ride his scooter to the park, approximately two miles from their home. This decision would lead to a devastating turn of events.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that a fellow park visitor discovered Olvin trapped inside the slide. According to Ms Valladares, the man attempted to free him, but Olvin’s shirt had become entangled on a screw, effectively strangling him. Olvin was reportedly hanging inside the slide, his collar tight around his neck. After the initial rescue efforts, paramedics arrived and took over, striving to save his life before rushing him to the hospital.
Despite the extensive medical efforts, Olvin was declared brain dead on Thursday, October 1. His sister, Stephany, took to fundraising platform GoFundMe to assist with the family’s funeral expenses, providing updates on the situation. “Our family held onto hope and prayed for a miracle,” she wrote, but ultimately, their hopes were dashed. Estefanía expressed the deep pain of losing her youngest child, stating that he was full of life and simply wanted to play when tragedy struck.
Following the incident, the City of Miami moved swiftly to close the playground for a “non-criminal investigation” the day after Olvin’s accident. Park officials cordoned off the area, placing yellow tape around the playground equipment. However, within 24 hours, the park was reopened to the public, with the slide back in use, prompting concerns regarding the safety of the playground facilities.
Local officials, including Miami District 3 Commissioner Rolando Escalona, have since called for a thorough investigation into the incident and for a review of the city’s park equipment. He voiced the community’s concerns over the safety of public play areas, particularly in light of what has transpired. “We owe it to Olvin and others to ensure that our parks are safe for our children,” Escalona stated.
In light of this unfortunate event, Estefanía Valladares has urged other parents to be vigilant when visiting playgrounds. She shared her grief and a cautionary message, “Look at the tragedy that happened to my son.” Her plea serves as a reminder of the potential dangers present in seemingly safe environments.
The Miami community has been left reeling from this tragic loss, with many mourning the young boy’s untimely death. Fellow residents have expressed their sympathies and offered support to the Valladares family during this difficult time. The incident has not only sparked conversations about playground safety but has also highlighted the need for stringent checks on public equipment to ensure such a tragedy does not occur again.
As investigations continue, both the City of Miami and the Miami Police Department have been contacted for further comment, yet responses remain pending. This case underscores the importance of safety vigilance in public spaces, particularly for children.
