A heart-wrenching incident in southeastern Michigan has left a family devastated after a four-year-old girl lost her life while trying to cross railroad tracks in Ecorse. The accident, which occurred on Sunday, 4 October, at approximately 6:30 PM, also left two others in the family, including the girl’s mother and older sister, in critical condition.

Authorities confirmed that the family was struck by a train as they attempted to navigate the tracks on Salliotte Road. Upon arrival, first responders discovered the young girl, her ten-year-old sister, and her 32-year-old mother, all in a dire state. They were promptly transported to a nearby hospital, where unfortunately, the girl, identified as Raniyah Chambliss, succumbed to her injuries.
Raniyah’s father expressed his profound sorrow, describing his daughter as a beautiful child who was an integral part of his life. The loss has not only shattered the family but has also highlighted concerns over railway safety in the area. Local residents have reported that the railroad tracks have long posed a significant risk due to the frequent presence of stationary trains, which often block visibility.
William Wilson, a local resident, shared his concerns about the dangers of crossing the tracks. He noted that trains frequently halt for extended periods, obstructing his view while he tries to navigate the crossing with his son. Similarly, another Ecorse inhabitant pointed out that she often witnesses people crossing the tracks, which raises fears for their safety.
“It’s very dangerous. Other trains can pass by, and if you can’t see one train, you might not see another,” she remarked. This ongoing issue suggests a broader problem with train crossings in Ecorse, where residents report that individuals routinely attempt to hop onto stationary trains, including students during their commute.
Following the tragic event, Ecorse Police Chief Derran Shelby extended his condolences to those affected and issued a stark warning to the public. He urged individuals to exercise extreme caution when near railway lines, emphasising the dangers associated with obstructions that can impede visibility. “A stopped train can block your view of another approaching train,” he explained. “Railroad equipment can move unexpectedly. Never climb over, crawl under, or pass between railroad cars.”
Authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Ecorse Police Department, Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office, and CN Rail, which operates within the area, have yet to release further details regarding their findings.
The tragic fate of Raniyah Chambliss has cast a shadow over the community, prompting calls for improved safety measures around the railway tracks. As family and friends mourn the loss of a young life, their grief is compounded by ongoing concerns about the safety of crossing train tracks, an issue that local authorities are urged to address promptly.
This devastating incident serves as a painful reminder of the crucial need for vigilance around railway crossings and the importance of prioritising safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Local residents continue to call for attention to be given to long-standing issues surrounding the railway in Ecorse, all in the hope that such a heartbreaking event will not occur again.
