A 53-year-old Uber driver, Hayadulla Turkmani, has entered a not guilty plea in a murder trial regarding the death of Michael Ashton, a 28-year-old man, which occurred in September 2025. The proceedings are taking place at Basildon Crown Court, where testimonies from witnesses, including Ashton’s partner, have painted a troubling picture of the events that led to the young man’s death.

The tragic incident reportedly unfolded on the night of September 26, 2025, after Ashton and his partner, Sophie Caroll, had enjoyed a dinner in east London. During the ride home, Ashston became ill and vomited inside the vehicle. Caroll recounted her attempts to mitigate the situation by cleaning up the mess with baby wipes, while tensions escalated between Ashton and Turkmani. She described the driver as appearing “upset” and “angry” in response to the unfortunate incident.

As Caroll attempted to calm the situation, she testified that the argument between Ashton and Turkmani intensified. It was during this commotion that she noticed a shift in Turkmani’s demeanor, suggesting he had calmed down as they prepared to exit the vehicle. However, according to Caroll, the situation took a turn when Turkmani made a provocative statement that prompted Ashton to turn back. In a shocking turn of events, Ashton was allegedly struck by the driver’s car shortly thereafter.
“I was hysterical, screaming; I called the ambulance straight away,” Caroll recounted in court, illustrating the panic and despair of the moment. Witnesses corroborated her testimony, with one stating that they observed a heated exchange between the driver and the passenger just before the incident occurred.
Another witness, identified as Ray Green, reported seeing Turkmani driving at “incredible speed” before the collision. He further claimed that Turkmani reversed his vehicle slightly before accelerating forward once more, ultimately hitting Ashton again. “I could hear what sounded like him being dragged along the floor,” Green testified, describing the distressing aftermath of the crash.
Tragically, Ashton succumbed to his injuries more than a week later, prompting an outpouring of grief from family and friends. A GoFundMe campaign was established to support funeral and legal expenses. In the campaign, loved ones described Ashton as a “shining light,” taken “unfairly and far too soon” from their lives.
Throughout the ongoing trial, emotional tributes have highlighted Ashton’s character, with friends recalling his “infectious smile” and his ability to uplift those around him. The community response to his passing paints a picture of a well-loved individual whose loss has left a significant void.
As the trial continues, the prosecution alleges that Turkmani’s actions demonstrated a reckless disregard for human life, accusing him of deliberately running over Ashton. Turkmani’s defence, however, maintains his innocence, arguing that there was no intention to harm in what ultimately proved to be a tragic incident.
This case underscores the growing concerns about safety in ride-hailing services and the responsibilities of drivers during unexpected circumstances. As the legal proceedings unfold, both the courtroom and the wider public await further developments in this heart-wrenching story.
With the proceedings still in progress, it remains to be seen what verdict will be reached for Turkmani, and how the community continues to navigate the aftermath of a loss that has evoked deep emotions and sparked calls for reflection on passenger safety in the modern transport landscape.
