In a tragic case that has shocked the community of Ladson, South Carolina, two young children, Emory Deacon, aged 2, and her 15-month-old sister, Harlow Deacon, were allegedly starved to death while in the care of their mother, Justine May. Law enforcement claims that the toddlers had been deceased for several days before their discovery, prompting a series of distressing revelations surrounding the circumstances leading to their deaths.

According to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, the children were found in their home on September 29, 2023. At the time of her arrest, May, 31, was reportedly found outside the residence “speaking incoherently.” A subsequent investigation determined that the children had likely died from starvation between three to five days prior to their being found. An online obituary for the girls stated they likely perished on September 24.
The father of the children, Zack Deacon, expressed his devastation and frustration, stating that their deaths “could and should have been prevented.” In a statement released through his legal representative, Zack outlined that multiple attempts to raise concerns about the children’s safety had been made by family members in the days leading up to the tragedy, but their pleas were ignored.

Zack Deacon’s lawyer, Gedney M. Howe, revealed that Zack was arrested on harassment charges after he had sent police to May’s home out of concern for Emory and Harlow’s well-being. May herself had disclosed this information on social media, where she described her former partner’s actions as intrusive. Despite a total of 13 welfare checks conducted by police at May’s residence in response to family concerns, no action was taken to intervene at that time.

In the weeks leading up to the children’s deaths, May had filled her social media pages with posts detailing her interactions with her family, including her mother and Zack, who had implored her to allow them access to the children and seek help. For example, one family member expressed concern over the absence of familial interaction, emphasising that the welfare of the children must take precedence over personal disagreements.
Screenshots shared by May on her Facebook account revealed desperate communications from Zack, where he urged her to seek assistance, acknowledging her struggles while insisting on her parental responsibilities. These exchanges reflect a heartbreaking struggle for the children’s well-being amidst a deteriorating family situation, with messages expressing concern for Justine’s mental health.
Following the tragic discovery of Emory and Harlow, the online obituary described the little girls as “precious bundles of joy” whose short lives were filled with music, laughter, and play. The tribute celebrated their individual personalities, showcasing Emory’s articulate nature and Harlow’s affectionate behaviour.
As the investigation unfolds, Justine May faces serious charges, including two counts of homicide by child abuse. Reports indicate that, in the days preceding their deaths, May had been in a state she described as a “blur,” claiming she could not recall the last time she fed her children.
As of now, information regarding her plea status remains unavailable, and inquiries have been made with her attorney for further clarification. This case has raised significant concern regarding the child welfare system and the effectiveness of intervention measures, as family members continue to advocate for accountability and justice for Emory and Harlow.
The community and family members remain in mourning, grappling with the loss of two innocent lives taken far too soon. This heartbreaking incident underscores the need for greater vigilance and support systems for families in crisis, highlighting the importance of listening to the voices of those who seek help for vulnerable children. The tragic fate of Emory and Harlow Deacon serves as a somber reminder of a reality that demands attention and action from society as a whole.
