John Reardon is set to make his highly anticipated return as Charlie Hudson in the popular Canadian procedural series ‘Hudson & Rex’ for its ninth season, which premieres on October 5 on Citytv in Canada. Reardon, who last featured in the show’s seventh season, stepped away to focus on treatment following a recent diagnosis of tonsil cancer. His absence was a disappointment for fans, particularly after he announced in September 2025 that he would not be returning for the next series.

In a positive turn of events, Reardon confirmed his comeback in May 2026, bringing renewed excitement to both fans and the cast alike. Speaking about the overwhelming support he’s received during his battle with cancer, Reardon expressed his gratitude, noting, “It’s humbling. I don’t think I ever understood how much the show meant to people.” He spoke about the strong connection viewers have with the show, particularly the bond between humans and their pets.
Reardon shares his enthusiasm for returning to the set, recalling the joy of being reunited with his canine co-stars. “It was a big exhale,” he revealed, describing the thrill of reconnecting with the dogs that play Rex. The actor noted, “I was just really excited to get back, to see everyone, the dogs, Newfoundland, get a wet doggy kiss, and to get back to work.”
The connection Reardon has with the dogs is palpable. Upon visiting the training facility, he was met with an enthusiastic welcome from the dogs, describing the experience as filled with “doggy slobber” and warmth. “It was really quite special,” he recounted, highlighting the genuine affection between himself and the dogs who portray Rex—a role now taken on by Diesel’s relatives following the original dog’s passing during season 7.
As Reardon gears up for the new season, he hints at the emotional reunion of Charlie Hudson and Rex on-screen, stating, “That moment where Charlie sees Rex… felt very much in line with that,” while refraining from giving too much away. He emphasized that he hopes this poignant scene resonates with viewers in the same way it did for him.
While Reardon took a break from the series, actor Luke Roberts stepped in as Detective Mark Hudson. With Reardon back, his character’s return from Belize promises to inject fresh energy into the storyline. Reardon explained that Charlie’s time apart has given him a deeper appreciation for his colleagues and especially for his partnership with Rex. “Charlie had been alone in the story, and then he comes back to his team. That sort of brings Charlie a new sense of appreciation for how much his team means to him,” he said.
The dynamics at play this season introduce new elements to the ongoing narrative, according to Reardon. He remarked, “There are all these new ideas… I’m just really excited because I think this new season is going to be great, and I hope that the fans still tune in and see that we have a lot of stories left to tell.”
Fans of ‘Hudson & Rex’ can look forward to the series premiering on October 5, which will air on Citytv in Canada and later in the US on UPtv. As anticipation builds, viewers can certainly expect a season filled with emotional reunions, deep connections, and compelling new storylines.
With Reardon back in action, the series is set for yet another thrilling chapter in the adventures of Charlie Hudson and his faithful companion Rex.
