Mason Flores, a promising young football player from Sweet Home High School in Oregon, passed away on October 5, the day he was set to celebrate his 16th birthday. His death follows a severe head injury sustained during a junior varsity game against Marist Catholic a week earlier, which left the community in shock and mourning.

Flores was injured during a home match on September 28. Following the incident, he experienced a seizure and was promptly transported to a hospital in Portland for emergency treatment. Medical professionals diagnosed him with a brain bleed, and he underwent surgery to address the swelling in his brain. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of the medical team, his condition continued to deteriorate.

On the day of his death, Mason’s family shared the heartbreaking news that he would not recover. He had embraced the joys of life, which made the circumstances surrounding his untimely passing all the more devastating. In a poignant statement made just before Mason’s death, Jenna Anderson, a colleague of his mother, expressed the collective feelings of grief from those who knew the teenager. She remarked on the bright future that lay ahead of Mason, a future now cruelly cut short.
Mason’s love for football was evident to all who knew him. “He loved playing football. He loved being out there, doing something that brought him genuine joy,” Anderson reflected. These sentiments were echoed by his teammates, friends, and family who deeply appreciated his infectious spirit and warmth.
In tribute to Mason, the Sweet Home Husky football team expressed their sorrow through a heartfelt Facebook post, honouring his vibrant personality and the impact he had on those around him. “We are proud to know him, and have him in our family,” the team stated, a testament to the close-knit nature of the group.
Superintendent Terry Martin of Sweet Home School District also reached out to the community with a moving video message. In it, he highlighted Mason’s remarkable character and the news that he would be an organ donor, giving the gift of life to others. Martin praised Mason for his ability to bring “immense light, warmth, and laughter” to the school environment. He also underscored the importance of community support during this difficult time and reassured students that counselling services would be readily available.
The community swiftly came together to support Mason’s family during his hospitalisation. A GoFundMe campaign, organised to assist the family with expenses, gained significant traction, reflecting the love and solidarity of the community. Additionally, a two-day car wash event, led by one of Mason’s friends, raised an impressive £19,000, while sales from the Dutch Bros. coffee chain contributed another £2,000 to aid the family.
Ryder Oakley, the friend responsible for the car wash initiative, spoke fondly of Mason, highlighting his compassionate nature. “He loved, just cared about other people, cared about his teammates. He’d come off the field and cheer other people on,” Oakley said, illustrating the selflessness that defined Mason’s character.
In light of this tragedy, the Sweet Home School District is committed to maintaining its scheduled homecoming celebrations with the family’s approval. The idea is to honour Mason’s memory, ensuring that his spirit remains alive within the community, even in such sorrowful times.
While mourning the loss of a bright young talent, students and faculty are being encouraged to support one another during the coming days, underlining the importance of unity and compassion in overcoming grief. The legacy of Mason Flores will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of many, reminding everyone of the joy he brought to those around him and the indelible mark he made in his short life.
