Sydney, a popular content creator with over a million followers on TikTok, documented her cancer diagnosis and treatment journey extensively. She received her diagnosis at just 23 years of age, after discovering a significant lump on her abdomen. As her illness progressed, she bravely shared updates on her condition, including the numerous surgeries, clinical trials, and chemotherapy treatments she underwent.

The announcement of her death on August 5 was met with an outpouring of grief from her followers and family alike. Austin had previously posted a tribute to Sydney, featuring a poignant photograph of her on a mountain peak alongside the words: “Rest in Peace Sydney Elizabeth Towle. An endless ray of sunshine. A daughter, a sister, and friend to so many.”
From the onset of her treatment journey, Sydney was candid about the challenges she faced. In May 2026, she documented a particularly difficult hospital stay, where she was supported by her mother. Tragically, Towle later revealed that her cancer had spread to the peritoneum, the lining of the abdomen and pelvis. Following her oncologist’s suggestion to transition to end-of-life care, she chose to seek a second opinion and continued her fight against the disease, exploring alternative treatment options.
Throughout her battle with cholangiocarcinoma, Sydney’s story resonated with many who followed her online. She often spoke to the media about the rarity of her diagnosis at such a young age, noting, “I don’t fit any of the demographic factors.” Despite the dire circumstances, she found purpose in connecting with others who were navigating similar struggles.
Since her passing, Austin has committed to honouring Sydney’s legacy in meaningful ways. He plans to run the New York City Marathon on November 1 as a member of Team Cholangiocarcinoma, taking over the place Sydney had secured to support the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation. In an Instagram post on August 18, he expressed his honour in participating in the marathon “in place” of his sister, aiming to raise awareness about the illness that claimed her life.
In doing so, Austin is not only continuing Sydney’s mission of advocacy but also keeping her spirit alive through his actions. The support from the online community, which Sydney cultivated over the years, remains strong as people rally behind Austin and his efforts.
Sydney’s journey and untimely death have brought attention to the experiences of young adults battling rare cancers. Her candidness and authenticity in sharing her story have inspired countless others, and her legacy will undoubtedly continue through the impact she had on those she encountered.
As Austin prepares for the marathon, he embodies the resilience and strength that was so intrinsic to Sydney’s character, ensuring that her light shines on even in her absence.
