Marc Summers, the iconic host of the beloved children’s game show *Double Dare*, reminisced about his remarkable career and the show’s enduring legacy as it celebrates its 40th anniversary. In a conversation with PEOPLE, Summers recalled the serendipitous events that led to his hosting role and the vibrant atmosphere of 1990s Nickelodeon.

Summers, now 74, was immediately drawn to the opportunity to host a game show when it was presented to him by a friend. He had been making a name for himself as a stand-up comedian but had limited experience in children’s television. The opportunity arose when his friend, ventriloquist Dave Garrison, decided to leave the audition process to pursue producing, recommending Summers take his place. “Of course, I want to host a game show,” Summers recalled his enthusiastic response.
Upon arriving at the audition, Summers faced a minor hiccup when the producers mistakenly called out Garrison’s name. Clearly passionate about the opportunity, Summers quickly stepped in and identified himself. His confidence during the audition impressed the producers, who ultimately agreed to let him try out for the role. Excitedly, Summers shared his experience of feeling he had nailed the audition, only to learn that the competition was still fierce with multiple calls back for the position.

Despite harbouring initial doubts about his ability to appeal to children, Summers pressed the creators of the show to evaluate potential hosts in front of actual kids. This innovative approach proved effective, as he received the news that he became the face of *Double Dare*. Reflecting on this pivotal moment in his life, Summers described how the experience transformed his career. “There was never a bad day on the set of *Double Dare*,” he noted, emphasising the joyful rapport he had with both the crew and contestants.
A notable feature of *Double Dare* was its signature slime which became a hallmark of the show. Summers described the original recipe, revealing that it consisted of vanilla pudding, applesauce, green food colouring, and oatmeal for thickness. He explained that early safety regulations intended for the slime to be edible, allowing children to consume it if they accidentally ingested some during the physical challenges. In later revivals of the show, he noted that the slime formula had changed, but it remained equally fun—if not visually identical to the original.
Playing a major role in the show’s success, Summers hosted a staggering 500 episodes from 1986 until 1989, then returned for *Family Double Dare* from 1990 to 1993 alongside numerous specials. When asked about his standout episode, he fondly recalled a memorable edition featuring wrestling legends Bobby “the Brain” Heenan and Gorilla Monsoon. “They were terrific entertainers, and that show remains a highlight in my memory as perhaps our best work,” he said.
As the anniversary celebration approaches, Summers expressed incredulity over the longevity of *Double Dare*. He mused on how he was just starting his career at 34 years old, and fast forward four decades, he is preparing for what he believes may be the final reunion. “I figure this is the last time we’re going to be doing this,” he stated thoughtfully, reflecting on the passage of time and his hopes for health in the future.
The upcoming celebration will take place in Philadelphia, where Summers will host a special reunion event featuring former producers and fellow cast members. This gathering is set to attract an audience of 300, who will enjoy live physical challenges reminiscent of the show, encounter the ever-engaging slime, and relive beloved clips, many of which have remained unseen or forgotten until now.
As *Double Dare* marks this significant milestone, Summers hopes it will be a nostalgic evening for everyone involved—an opportunity to reconnect with the warmth and camaraderie that defined the series. “It’s going to be an exciting 90-minute show filled with the joy of going back in time,” he concluded, eager to share this celebration with fans and friends alike.
