A former student of Cornell University has initiated legal action against the institution and seven individuals, claiming she was sexually assaulted at the Chi Phi fraternity house on 19 October 2024. The student, referred to only as Jane Doe, has provided a detailed account of the alleged incident, portraying it as a traumatic experience that has fundamentally altered her life.

The legal complaint, filed on 16 September, outlines that Doe was subjected to rape for several hours during the evening in question. According to her attorney, Thomas Giuffra, she was reportedly coerced into taking drugs that rendered her incapacitated. The allegations indicate a disturbing atmosphere of peer pressure and predatory behaviour within the fraternity environment.
In a concerning twist, a screenshot of a Snapchat message was included in the lawsuit. This message was allegedly sent by one of the fraternity members in a group chat dubbed “Chi Phi Actives,” containing explicit references that suggested there was “free p—-” available upstairs. This detail has raised further questions about the fraternity’s culture and the accountability of its members.

Giuffra revealed that Doe had aspired to attend Cornell University for many years, considering it her dream school. She was enrolled in the university’s renowned hotel management programme, which she regarded as the best in the country. Tragically, her aspirations came to an abrupt halt after the alleged assault, preventing her from graduating; she last attended classes in February 2025 and has not returned since.
In November 2024, Doe reported the incident to local law enforcement. Although prosecutors reopened the case following the filing of the civil lawsuit, Governor Kathy Hochul has now assigned New York Attorney General Letitia James to oversee the matter. This decision stemmed from a diminishing trust in how the district attorney and university police handled the initial investigation.
The case has garnered public attention, especially after legal representatives for several of the accused men categorically denied any involvement in criminal activity. This denial has, however, been met with mixed public sentiment, leading to a heightened sense of alarm for Jane Doe. While she has received a wave of support from individuals worldwide, Giuffra noted that the young woman has also faced online harassment, which has exacerbated her fears and sense of safety.

Supporting messages from various corners of the globe have flooded in, with Giuffra sharing that Doe has received encouragement from as far away as Ireland and South America. He emphasised the significance of this support in aiding her through the difficult period. “There’s been a lot of support,” he stated, acknowledging the overwhelming kindness shown towards his client.
Conversely, the online threats from some individuals, particularly men who have endeavoured to undermine her, have left Doe feeling vulnerable. Giuffra expressed his concern about the negative impact of these harassers, arguing that they aim to intimidate and diminish her spirit. “They’ve made her scared, they’ve made her feel unsafe,” he added.
Reflecting on Jane Doe’s current state, her attorney stated that she is in a process of healing, although her life remains in disarray post-assault. Attempts to relocate to New York City proved too overwhelming, ultimately forcing her to return home. Giuffra further explained that her future remains uncertain, which is a common struggle for survivors of such traumatic experiences.
Doe’s legal action marks a critical point in her journey toward reclaiming her narrative and advocating for justice. As the case unfolds, it serves not only as a personal battle for Doe but also highlights broader societal issues regarding sexual assault and the protective measures needed within educational institutions.
