A tragic incident occurred in the village of Wellsburg, New York, on Sunday, 4th October, resulting in multiple injuries during a hayride. The crash, which happened around 4:38 p.m. local time, involved a tractor pulling a trailer that was carrying 19 people, predominantly children. Reports indicate that at least 14 individuals sustained injuries, with three of them, including the driver, listed in critical condition.

The incident took place at the intersection of Berwick Turnpike and Comfort Hill Road. According to Chemung County Sheriff Bill Schrom, the green tractor appeared to be travelling at a high speed when it lost control. As it approached the intersection, the vehicle swerved to the right, resulting in a roll-over and the trailer becoming detached from the tractor.

Witness accounts reveal a chaotic scene following the accident. The tractor overturned, dragging the driver for several yards before coming to a stop against a tree. Unfortunately, passengers in the trailer were subsequently ejected from their seats during the incident, leading to numerous injuries.

Sheriff Schrom confirmed that 14 individuals were hurt, with five requiring transport to Robert Packer Hospital by ambulance. An additional eight individuals were taken to medical facilities by other means. Among the injured, three people remained in a critical state, including the driver, who was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital for urgent care.
The sheriff speculated that a malfunctioning brake may have contributed to the tragic accident. In his comments, he noted that at least one of the brakes on the tractor was significantly burnt, suggesting it may have failed just before the driver lost control. “He could’ve been having some problems for quite a distance,” Schrom remarked. “For whatever reason, he wasn’t able to stop somewhere else or thought he could safely make it to the bottom of the hill and unfortunately wasn’t able to.”
The hayride was part of an outing organised by a local German Baptist community following a church service. Residents nearby described the aftermath of the crash as harrowing. Jeremy Brent, a Wellsburg local, recalled seeing children’s belongings scattered across the driveway in the wake of the incident, highlighting the distressing nature of the event.
Local authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. As of now, the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office has not released further information concerning their inquiries. Eyewitnesses and community members have expressed their shock at the accident, with many people offering thoughts and prayers for those affected.
This incident has raised alarms about safety protocols for recreational activities such as hayrides, particularly when children are involved. Community members are likely to engage in discussions about appropriate measures to ensure such tragedies do not recur in the future.
As investigations continue, questions remain regarding the operational standards of the tractor and whether adequate safety checks were performed prior to the hayride. This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with outdoor activities and the necessity of vigilance when it comes to vehicle maintenance and safety procedures.
