Tisha Campbell has unveiled the backstory behind her iconic role as Gina in the beloved 1990s sitcom “Martin”, which almost didn’t materialise due to competing opportunities. In a recent episode of “Taboo’s Comics & Kicks,” the actress shared insights about her collaboration with Martin Lawrence during the filming of their 1990 hit film, “House Party”.

Following the success of “House Party”, Campbell recollects that Lawrence repeatedly expressed his desire for her to star as his girlfriend in any future projects, be it a film or a television series. “After we did House Party together, Martin would say things like, ‘I don’t care what it is, I just got a deal, and I want you to play my girlfriend,’” Campbell reminisced. Initially, she was sceptical and brushed it off, believing it was simply informal banter common in the industry.

Years later, at a film premiere in New York, Lawrence stopped Campbell to reiterate his ambitions for a project. “He was like, ‘Yo, I think something’s happening,’” Campbell recalled. However, when she returned home, she received news that another show she had auditioned for was picked up by ABC for a 13-episode season.
Despite the excitement of her new opportunity, Lawrence reached out to Campbell to inform her that he was ready to proceed with his show. Torn between the two prospects, she hesitated, explaining to Lawrence that she would have to decline since her other show had already been accepted while his was still just a pilot.
Unfazed, Lawrence insisted on meeting Campbell and even went so far as to request her home address. With a chuckle, Campbell shared that she was living with her mother at the time, but that was not going to deter Lawrence. When he arrived, he discovered Campbell’s long-time friend Tichina Arnold was there, who had coincidentally auditioned for the new show as well.
Lawrence, unaware of the duo’s connection, was surprised by Arnold’s presence and quickly directed his focus back to Campbell. “He was like, ‘What are you doing? I’ll deal with you later. Where’s Tisha?’” Campbell recounted. In their discussion, Lawrence pressed for Campbell to drop her commitments to the ABC show in favour of his project, insisting that it would be worth it.
The negotiations between the two continued for some time, with Campbell feeling a strong inclination to follow her intuition. “God kept telling me, ‘You’ve got to go with Martin,’” she said, which ultimately led her to make the difficult choice to turn down the ABC series despite its financial appeal.
In making the decision to join Lawrence’s show, Campbell quickly found herself taking on the role of Gina Waters Payne, a character that would resonate with audiences throughout the show’s five-season run. Gina was depicted as Lawrence’s sensible girlfriend, later becoming his wife, a dynamic that contributed to the show’s enduring popularity.
The impact of “Martin” on the television landscape remains significant, as the sitcom captured the life and culture of African Americans in a fresh, relatable way. The series not only showcased the comedic talents of its lead actors but also provided a platform for a narrative that many viewers found both humorous and poignant.
Campbell’s journey to stardom was shaped by her faith in her instincts and her relationship with Lawrence, which ultimately blossomed into a partnership that defined a generation of television. The myriad of decisions that led her to star in “Martin” illustrate the intricate balance between ambition, opportunity, and personal connections in the entertainment industry.
As Campbell continues to reflect on her career, she remains grateful for the bond she formed with Lawrence and the success they achieved together on the show. Her story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of show business and the importance of seizing opportunities when they arise.
