Nigel Barker, the renowned British model and photographer, recently shared insights into his journey from aspiring model to prominent judge on America’s Next Top Model (ANTM). During a conversation with Josh McBride on The McBride Rewind podcast, Barker reflected on his early experiences in the modelling world, revealing that he was a contestant in a notable televised competition in England, The Clothes Show, back in 1989.

Barker’s journey began when his mother entered him into The Clothes Show, a programme similar to ANTM, which showcased the talents of aspiring models. Despite not clinching the title, Barker achieved a respectable third place and earned a modelling contract as a result. This early experience provided him with a unique perspective, one that would later influence his role as a judge on the reality competition.

“I came third, but it was a televised show, a bit like Top Model,” Barker told McBride. He highlighted the irony of being the sole judge on ANTM with a background as a contestant, emphasising that he understood the struggles and aspirations of the young models vying for success. “I totally knew what it was like to be them,” he explained, underlining the empathy he felt towards those competing on the show.
Though Barker’s history as a contestant is not widely known, he expressed that it was an integral part of his journey. “No one knows that part; that really was never talked about on Top Model,” he recalled. He reiterated that his experiences gave him a sense of understanding towards the contestants, reaffirming that “things can happen” in the unpredictable world of modelling.
While his journey on The Clothes Show opened doors for him, Barker also acknowledged that he found success in his own right. Even though he did not win the competition, the opportunities that arose from it were significant, and he managed to carve out a niche in the industry through hard work and perseverance. “I got a modelling contract back in the day and I kind of did my own thing,” he said, illustrating his determination to succeed.
Barker’s role on ANTM began with a vision of balance among the judging panel. His background as a former contestant brought a refreshing perspective to the evaluation of aspiring models. However, his time on the show faced turbulence; he was unexpectedly fired before the programme entered its 19th cycle. Reflecting on the decision, Barker expressed his disappointment, stating that it left him with a sense of betrayal.
In the 2026 documentary, Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, he elaborated on the emotional impact of his dismissal. “It was difficult, because I didn’t have a backup plan at that point,” he explained, revealing the uncertainty he faced after leaving the show. Barker’s journey highlights the highs and lows of a career in entertainment, revealing a deeper layer to his public persona.
The shared experiences of aspiring models and judges like Barker contribute to the narrative of competition shows like ANTM. His perspective as someone who has experienced both sides of the judging panel underscores the challenges faced by contestants. Barker’s insights, largely overlooked during his time on the show, can serve as valuable lessons to both aspiring models and audiences alike.
As Barker continues to share his story, he emphasises the importance of compassion and understanding within the competitive environment of modelling. His journey, from a contestant to a respected figure in the industry, showcases the varied paths that talent can take and reminds us of the resilience required in the face of setbacks. As he reflects on his experiences, Barker remains an inspiring figure for those looking to make their mark in the ever-evolving world of fashion.
