Alicia Harris, a 42-year-old cancer survivor, has shared her remarkable journey online, offering insight and support to others facing similar challenges. Her story began in 2021, during what was intended to be a routine prenatal check-up when her doctor detected something unusual during a breast exam. At 14 weeks pregnant, Harris initially attributed the finding to pregnancy-related changes, but she opted for an ultrasound that led to a diagnosis of invasive ductal carcinoma.

The initial response from her medical team was disheartening, urging her to consider terminating her pregnancy. However, Harris was determined to explore all available options and sought a second opinion. This decision would prove pivotal in her journey, as she found a doctor experienced in navigating cancer treatment for pregnant women. Following the advice of her new healthcare provider, Harris underwent a lumpectomy and began chemotherapy during her third trimester, ultimately welcoming her daughter, Journi, at 36 weeks.

Reflecting on her year and a half of treatment, which included hormone therapy, Harris candidly describes the emotional difficulties of managing her health while pregnant. “It was challenging to reconcile the excitement of impending motherhood with the weight of a cancer diagnosis,” she shares. She realised there was a gap in emotional support for women facing such dual challenges, which inspired her to establish Journey for Two, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to assisting expectant mothers who are confronted with a cancer diagnosis.
Harris expressed the significance of survivorship, noting it is often a less-discussed phase of the cancer journey. “Survivorship isn’t just about ringing the bell at the end of treatment; it’s a continual process filled with its own set of challenges,” she remarked. Even while striving to provide support to others through her nonprofit, Harris revealed moments of profound loneliness, emphasizing that many do not understand what it means to reclaim a sense of self after such a life-altering experience.
Motivated by her own journey, Harris decided to take a more hands-on approach to helping others and pursued a career as an oncology nurse. She expressed a desire to work in the very hospital where she received treatment, wishing to give back to the community that supported her during her darkest times. Going back to education at the age of 40 proved daunting, as she grappled with imposter syndrome despite her determination to succeed. “Transitioning from the beauty industry to nursing felt like learning a completely new language,” Harris explained.
Having battled cancer has notably altered Harris’s outlook on life. She recognises the value of every moment, wishing to create a meaningful impact through her work. “I’ve learned that I don’t always have to be strong; I need support too,” she stated, now valuing the sisterhood of shared experiences among those in her profession and the patients she assists.
In her role as a nurse, Harris shares her personal story openly with patients, hoping to provide reassurance and empathy. She recalls a poignant moment when a supportive nurse comforted her during her initial appointment, and now she aspires to be that same light for others. While revisiting memories of her own treatment can sometimes be emotionally challenging, she finds her role incredibly fulfilling.
Harris has also contributed her story to AboutDamnTime.com, a platform providing educational resources and real-life accounts to aid women navigating the aftermath of breast cancer treatment. She believes that even a single individual benefiting from her experience makes her efforts worthwhile. “This is a part of my life, and if my story can help others, I will continue to share it,” she affirmed.
Through her journey, Alicia Harris not only demonstrates resilience but also embodies the spirit of community and support that is crucial in the face of adversity. Her commitment to helping others, combined with her newfound perspective, showcases the strength that can emerge from profound challenges.
