A 75-year-old woman from California has been taken into custody facing charges of animal cruelty and abandonment following a distressing incident involving her puppy. Hahn Nguyen was arrested in Santa Ana on 1 October after police investigated reports regarding the tragic fate of her nine-month-old pit bull mix named Blackey.

The disturbing event unfolded on 8 September when a neighbour alerted authorities after witnessing a puppy that appeared to be abandoned. Police initiated an investigation that soon revealed surveillance footage capturing the shocking episode. In the recorded material, Nguyen was seen exiting the driver’s side of her Honda minivan and unceremoniously dropping the puppy onto the street.

Once the dog was on the ground, Nguyen reportedly placed food near the vehicle to entice Blackey to approach. As the puppy approached the vehicle for food, Nguyen moved her minivan forward, resulting in the puppy being struck by the rear wheels. For a harrowing duration of approximately 15 seconds, the vehicle remained stationary with Blackey trapped beneath it before Nguyen drove off, leaving the mortally injured puppy behind.
Tragically, Blackey succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter, prompting further repercussions for Nguyen. In the follow-up investigation, police initially struggled to decipher the license plate of the Honda minivan. However, they successfully identified the vehicle through automated license plate reading technology, leading them directly to Nguyen’s address in nearby Anaheim.
Upon questioning, Nguyen allegedly acknowledged her ownership of the dog and admitted to abandoning him. Authorities reported that the minivan, used in the incident, was discovered parked inside her garage. Following this revelation, Nguyen was formally booked into Santa Ana Jail.
Upon reviewing the charges, it has been noted that animal abandonment is classified as a misdemeanor offence in California. In contrast, the charge of animal cruelty could be considered a “wobbler,” which means it may be prosecuted either as a misdemeanor or a felony depending on circumstances. The final determination will be up to prosecutors, based on the details gathered in their investigation.
As of now, there have been no updates regarding whether Nguyen has entered a plea or secured legal representation for her case. The incident has undoubtedly sparked outrage within the local community, raising broader discussions about animal welfare and the responsibilities of pet ownership.
Santa Ana Police have also shared information about the grave nature of animal cruelty, emphasising that such actions will not be tolerated. They continue to encourage residents to report similar incidents of suspected animal abuse or neglect, reinforcing the importance of safeguarding vulnerable animals in the community.
As the legal proceedings move forward, many will be closely monitoring the case, highlighting ongoing concerns over the treatment of animals and the repercussions faced by those who fail to uphold their duty of care. More information about the case is anticipated in the coming weeks, as authorities evaluate the evidence and outline the next steps in the judicial process.
