In an unexpected turn of events, actor Owen Thiele, known for his role in the series ‘Adults’, found friendship amid the crisis of a diverted Delta Air Lines flight. His experience, which occurred during a flight from Los Angeles to New York City, became a heartwarming highlight during an appearance on the 2 October episode of *The Jennifer Hudson Show*.

On 9 September, Thiele was aboard flight 958 when it was forced to divert to Albuquerque due to the detection of a smoky odour within the aircraft. He recounted the moment the crew announced the emergency landing, where he noticed fellow actor Andrew Garfield sitting next to him. “I had my headphones in and was aware of a lot of commotion; when I looked, I realised Andrew Garfield was next to me,” Thiele shared. “I thought everyone around was just obsessed with him until they told us we were landing in Albuquerque.”

Delta Airlines had confirmed that the flight diverted for safety reasons, landing “uneventfully” in New Mexico. Following the unscheduled stop, passengers faced a lengthy layover of approximately ten hours. Thiele, known for his lighthearted online presence, documented the unusual delay through a series of entertaining Instagram Stories.

During the wait, Thiele had hoped to collaborate on a movie with Garfield; however, he soon realised Garfield had disappeared into the airport crowds. Undeterred, Thiele struck up a conversation with nine other passengers, quickly forming a friendship circle that provided companionship through the lengthy delay. “I literally talked my way into a friend group,” Thiele remarked, spotlighting the spontaneity of new connections formed in unlikely situations.
As a group, Thiele and his newfound friends opted to explore local options to pass the time. They first enjoyed drinks at the airport and then ventured to a nearby Dave & Buster’s. When late-night hunger struck, they ordered a late-night feast from P.F. Chang’s, opting for Uber Eats since many places had closed for the night. “Nothing stays open at 2 a.m. in Albuquerque,” Thiele noted while recounting their culinary effort.
Following the eventful day, Thiele maintained contact with the friends he made on the flight, creating a group chat called “I Love Albuquerque” to stay updated and share memories. When Hudson inquired about the possibility of a reunion among the group, Thiele expressed enthusiasm, saying, “I would love it. I think they all live in New York, but I’m always in New York.”
In a delightful surprise segment of the show, Hudson welcomed five of Thiele’s fellow passengers on stage, leading to an impromptu reunion that celebrated their unique shared experience. Thiele lightened the mood further by joking, “If I ever get surprised, I hope it was Zara Larsson or you guys. And it was you guys!”
As parting gifts, Hudson presented the group with white T-shirts emblazoned with the slogan “I ♥ Albuquerque & J Hud,” allowing them to commemorate their unusual but memorable journey together.
This whimsical incident highlights not only the unpredictability of travel but also the serendipitous friendships that can arise amid adversity. As Thiele’s story demonstrates, sometimes a flight diversion can lead to lasting connections, reminding us that even in stressful moments, joy and laughter can manifest in unexpected ways.
