While authorities have yet to officially identify the victims, Riverdale Fire Chief Matt Hennessy confirmed that a father and three of his children, ranging in age from five to twelve, lost their lives in the incident. Neighbour Derek Henderson expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the family as “an amazing family” who were integral to the neighborhood.

In response to the fire, hundreds of community members came together to hold a vigil at a local church on Thursday evening. The gathering lasted for about two hours, serving as a space for collective mourning and remembrance of the deceased. Among those participating was Bishop David Messina, who shared his close friendship with the father who perished in the fire. “This family was a salt of the earth family,” he stated, grieving the loss and highlighting the father’s character as a “great friend” and a “good, good man.”
The Riverdale Fire Department also expressed heartfelt condolences in their statement, acknowledging the deep loss felt not only by the family but also by the wider community. “Our hearts go out to the family, friends and loved ones affected by this tragedy. This is a devastating loss for the family and the community,” they said in a written release.
