A treasured teddy bear, which featured on the popular television programme “Antiques Roadshow” back in 1996, has recently been re-evaluated, revealing a substantial increase in its value. Originally appraised at between $7,000 and $8,000, the bear, made by the renowned German company Steiff, is now estimated to be worth around $10,000 as of 2026.

The bear, known affectionately as Buffy, was presented by a woman during the show’s inaugural season, which aired in 1997. At the time, she described how she came into possession of Buffy after her father passed away. The bear had previously belonged to her stepfather’s family, adding a layer of sentimental value to the already cherished toy.

During the initial appraisal, toy expert Noel Barrett remarked on the bear’s excellent condition, stating that it appeared to have been exceptionally well cared for. Barrett noted Buffy’s significant age, guessing she dated back to the mid-1920s, a period that actually aligns with the production timeline of Steiff bears. The woman confirmed her belief that the bears were around 65 to 70 years old when they appeared on the show.

Steiff has a long-standing reputation for producing high-quality teddy bears, having started operations in the early 1900s. One of the defining features of these bears is a small button located in their ear, a detail that Barrett highlighted during the appraisal. The woman admitted she had no prior knowledge about the importance of the button until a friend pointed it out to her.
Barrett indicated that the design and style of this button could aid in dating the bear, alongside other characteristics such as its size and colour. Measuring 24 inches in length and featuring long arms and a distinctive hump back, Buffy embodies the traits collectors often seek. Barrett remarked on the bear’s rare champagne colour, explaining that while many Steiff bears tend to be brownish or golden, white bears hold more value in the collectors’ market.
Despite some minor wear on the felt and feet, Barrett deemed Buffy to be in “exceptional condition.” His expert evaluation suggested that, if presented at auction, the bear could fetch a price in the region of $7,000 to $8,000. The woman was visibly surprised by the valuation, exclaiming in amazement, “My husband’s out of town. He’s gonna die!”
In a recent update shared by Antiques Roadshow, it was revealed that Buffy’s value has appreciated significantly over the years. By 2026, the bear is now valued at approximately $10,000, illustrating the timeless appeal and investment potential of these beloved toys.
Buffy is not an isolated case; Steiff bears have been featured on Antiques Roadshow on various occasions. In an earlier episode from 2001, a woman presented a 1909 Steiff bear, which was valued at about £4,000 (around $5,900 at that time). Such valuations often highlight the historical and emotional significance associated with these treasured collectibles.
The American edition of Antiques Roadshow has been captivating audiences since its debut in 1997 and has run for an impressive 29 seasons. New episodes continue to air on Mondays via PBS, the PBS app, and YouTube, providing enthusiasts with the opportunity to appreciate the rich history and value of antiques, including timeless toys like Buffy the teddy bear.
