A handwritten note from a Delta airline flight attendant has rekindled an emotional connection between a grieving passenger and the person who extended a gesture of kindness following the death of the passenger’s father. The reunion between Karoline Kinjorski and Melissa Sausaman took place at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport on September 14, nearly four years after their initial encounter on a flight.

In 2022, Kinjorski boarded a flight from Seattle to Detroit in a state of shock, having just received the devastating news of her father’s passing. Travelling with her boyfriend, she was seeking solace amidst her grief. In an effort to find comfort during the turbulent time, she requested a simple cup of chamomile tea from the flight crew. Unfortunately, she was informed that such tea was not a standard offering on domestic flights.

However, flight attendant Melissa Sausaman soon returned, having tracked down a bag of chamomile tea and a handwritten note. The note read, “Ms. Kinjorski, we are so sorry to hear about your father. Please let us know if there is ANYTHING we can get you to make today less stressful,” signed with hearts from four different crew members. This moment was so impactful that Kinjorski vividly remembers feeling an overwhelming sense of gratitude as she absorbed Sausaman’s kindness.

Kinjorski reflected, “I had to have been sobbing, because I was texting my mum, saying, ‘That’s dad. Dad’s there and he’s saying he sees you.'” Although she struggled to remember the details of the flight, the emotional support provided by Sausaman became a lasting memory in Kinjorski’s heart.
Recognising the complexity of grief, Sausaman recollected her intention behind the note. She understood that many passengers dealing with loss may prefer solitude rather than interaction, and she strove to find a balance in her approach. “When somebody goes through grief like that on the plane, a lot of time, they don’t want any interaction. They just want their own space,” Sausaman explained. Her thoughtful gesture allowed Kinjorski to find some comfort during a profoundly difficult journey.
Fast forward to last month, Kinjorski unearthed the handwritten note while perusing a book she had taken on the fateful flight. Instinctively, she felt compelled to reconnect with Sausaman, believing the flight attendant should be aware of the impact her kindness had on Kinjorski’s grief. She turned to social media, posting a heartfelt message on TikTok and Instagram in hopes of reuniting with the flight attendant.
The emotional recounting of her experience resonated widely, and the posts began to gain traction. However, as days turned into weeks without a response, Kinjorski started to lose hope. Just when she thought the search was coming to a halt, she received assistance from a member of the Delta team, which ultimately facilitated their reunion.
Kinjorski described the moment they met as a continuation of an incredible story. “Grief can be so dark, but also, it’s so beautiful. The most profound expression of love for someone is to greet them,” she said. For Sausaman, witnessing the lasting effect of her small act of kindness was a powerful reminder of the significance of seemingly minor gestures of compassion.
Reflecting on their encounter, Sausaman conveyed, “A cup of tea is like a cup of tea, but it’s not just a cup of tea. Little moments that don’t take a ton of time convey so much to the other person. Little acts of kindness can really just balloon into something a thousand times the size.”
Kinjorski hopes their story will inspire others to reach out and show kindness, even if it feels uncomfortable or difficult. “If you see someone in need, reach out to help them. Smile at someone, ask if they’re okay. Those small things every day will keep a connection and can have a lasting impact on someone’s life,” she urged.
The reunion serves not only as a personal reflection on a time of grief but also as a testament to the power of human connection and compassion, illustrating how a small act can resonate far beyond its original intent.
