Thirteen-year-old Neha Blunt from Marlton, New Jersey, has made a significant contribution to environmental conservation through her innovative web application, Water Savers, which aims to track and reduce household water waste. This free-to-use platform has gained considerable traction, educating over one million users across the globe about effective water conservation practices.
The inspiration for this project came to Blunt after she discovered that a leaky faucet can squander more than 2,000 gallons of water each month. This alarming statistic served as a catalyst for her to develop a tool that empowers households to recognise and mitigate their water usage. Blunt’s commitment to environmental sustainability has been recognised widely, earning her third place in the 2026 International Young Eco-Hero Awards, organised by the nonprofit Action for Nature.
Blunt’s journey began in 2023, taking seven months to develop the web-based application. Her choice of a digital platform was deliberate, aimed at making the resource accessible to individuals from lower-income backgrounds who may struggle with water conservation education. Water Savers features informative articles, video tutorials, interactive games, and a plethora of resources focused on promoting awareness about water usage and conservation techniques.
In addition to winning accolades for her app, Blunt’s efforts have been recognised within her local community. She secured third place in the 2023 Congressional App Challenge and has been appointed as a Water Conservation Ambassador by the Evesham Environmental Commission. These achievements underline her dedication to fostering environmental awareness and promoting sustainable practices among her peers.
Looking ahead, Blunt is collaborating with the Evesham Municipal Utilities Authority to enhance her application with additional interactive features, further broadening its scope and usefulness. In a statement on Action for Nature’s website, she articulated her motivation, saying, “When resources seem abundant, people slip into passive habits and waste water without ever realising it. True environmental justice means everyone deserves access to clean water and a healthy living environment, no matter where they live.”
In an interview with South Jersey Local News, Blunt elaborated on her passion for water conservation, crediting her mother for instilling in her an appreciation for the preciousness of this vital resource. “My mum has always taught my sisters and me that water is a valuable resource, and that it is our collective responsibility to use it wisely and avoid waste,” she explained.
Accessibility remains a core principle of her initiative, and Blunt emphasises the importance of practical, attainable lifestyle changes that everyone can implement. “My campaign urges residents to adopt achievable lifestyle changes that support a sustainable future where every drop counts,” she stated. She highlighted simple actions, such as turning off the tap while brushing teeth, using low-flow showerheads, and promptly fixing leaking toilets, as measures that could ultimately lead to substantial water savings.
Blunt’s vision extends beyond mere app development; she aspires to galvanise her peers into action within their communities. “You don’t have to wait until you’re older to make an impact,” she remarked. “You can take something that you’re passionate about, whether that’s technology, science, art, or anything else, and use it to solve a problem that you care about.”
