While attending the Zurich Film Festival on 30 September, Boyle made headlines with his comments about O’Connell. He stated, “They should cast Jack O’Connell as Bond,” praising the actor’s performance as British tabloid editor Larry Lamb in their recent project. Boyle highlighted O’Connell’s earlier work in the 2024 Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black,” commending him for delivering a challenging performance as the protagonist’s boyfriend.
Boyle, who was initially attached to helm the 2021 Bond film “No Time to Die,” later departed the project due to creative differences. Reflecting on his experience, he remarked, “When they asked me to do Bond, we came up with the story [with John Hodge] and they lost confidence in it. It’s a shame, because it could have been really good.” His thoughts on the current direction of the franchise, now in the hands of Oscar-nominated director Denis Villeneuve, were equally positive, suggesting that the franchise is still in capable hands.
