The world of brown bears in Alaska’s Katmai National Park has a new champion: Backpack, also known as Bear 89, has emerged victorious in the 2026 Fat Bear Week competition, triumphing over Bear 910 in the highly anticipated final match between two first-time finalists. The announcement of Backpack’s win came on 29th September, and celebrations for the beloved bear are already in full swing.

Backpack’s journey to the title is a testament to resilience and survival. He first made his appearance at Brooks River in 2006 alongside his mother, Holly. It was during these early days that he acquired his affectionate nickname, stemming from his habit of riding on his mother’s back while they swam together. However, his path to becoming a celebrated figure in the park was anything but smooth. As a cub, Backpack suffered a severe leg injury that put his future in jeopardy.

The injury became apparent when Backpack returned to Brooks River the following summer. Observers noted his struggle to walk, favouring the injured limb and looking increasingly vulnerable. Concerned spectators raised alarms with park rangers, suggesting intervention. However, experts recognised the potential risks of interfering, as such actions could sever the bond between the cub and his mother and disrupt their natural way of life.

Fortunately, nature took its course. With Holly by his side, Backpack gradually healed without human intervention. By the time he separated from his mother the following year, there were no visible signs of his past injury, and he had transformed into a robust adult bear, frequently seen at Brooks Falls during the glorious salmon runs of early summer.

What sets Backpack apart from other bears is his unique approach to competition. While many male bears are known for using brute force to secure the best fishing spots, Backpack has relied on a more measured strategy. Described as possessing a “quiet strength,” he stands firm when necessary, exhibiting patience and reserve that have proven effective in his quest for sustenance.

Interestingly, Backpack’s victory adds a poignant twist to his family history. His mother, Holly, claimed the Fat Bear Week title in 2019, making this year’s win a proud legacy within the family. The 2026 competition saw a total of 16 bears, with Backpack ultimately prevailing after a series of fan-voted eliminations leading to his final confrontation with Bear 910.

Fat Bear Week has blossomed from its original single-day event, “Fat Bear Tuesday,” in 2014 into a vibrant week-long celebration that captivates audiences worldwide. Last year’s contest attracted over one million participants from around the globe, showcasing the growing enthusiasm for these magnificent creatures.
