In a dramatic rescue, emergency teams successfully airlifted a man who found himself stranded atop his overturned truck amid severe flooding in Arizona. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, September 29, in Tonopah, where relentless floodwaters caused significant disruption.

Rescue efforts were coordinated by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, who dispatched a helicopter crew following reports that an individual was trapped on the roof of his vehicle in a flooded wash at the intersection of 327th Avenue. Footage posted on social media captures the harrowing scene, showcasing the man clinging to his truck while it was surrounded by fast-flowing water.
The rescue operation was swiftly mobilised, with experts indicating that a helicopter hoist would be the safest means to reach the stranded driver. A rescue specialist was lowered from the aircraft and was able to secure the individual to a rescue harness before he was airlifted to safety. Pilot Rich Dickner, who played a key role in the rescue, recounted the team’s rapid response. “He was up on the truck, it flipped on its side, he was straddling it,” Dickner detailed in an interview. He noted that the water level had risen alarmingly fast, prompting a quick decision from the rescue teams to secure the man as swiftly as possible.
According to the Arizona Fire & Medical Authority, the trapped driver was approximately 30 feet away from the nearest shoreline when help arrived. Video from the scene revealed that Deputy Lindsey Smith was lowered around 80 feet down to the truck, where she had to navigate challenging conditions. Although Smith encountered difficulties with her initial attempt to grasp the vehicle, she successfully grabbed hold, stabilising herself around one of the truck’s wheels.
The entire rescue operation took less than five minutes from the moment Deputy Smith reached the man to the time they were both safely airborne. The urgency of their task was further underscored by the rising waters, which had made the situation increasingly perilous.
Reflecting on the frequent flooding in the region, Dickner remarked, “As long as I’ve been here, it’s always the same scenario and, for the most part, the same places.” This observation highlights the ongoing risks posed by floods, particularly as drivers navigate familiar routes that can quickly become hazardous during adverse weather events.
