**Pennsylvania Students Hailed as Heroes After Bus Driver’s Medical Emergency**
A group of high school students from Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, demonstrated remarkable bravery on 18 September when they intervened to avert a potential disaster after their bus driver suffered a medical emergency. Their quick actions during the crisis have garnered widespread admiration from the local community and school officials.
The event unfolded as students from the Hollidaysburg Area School District were being transported home following the school day. Footage captured from inside the bus depicted panic as the vehicle began rolling forward, with one student waiting to disembark and others soon realising the urgency of the situation. In the video, students can be heard calling out instructions for their peers to “Press the brake,” while some rushed towards the front in a bid to assist the incapacitated driver.
Senior Skyla Horton was pivotal in bringing the situation under control. She managed to engage the parking brake and opened the bus doors, allowing fellow students to exit safely. Travis Zerby, another senior, took charge of communicating with emergency services, employing the bus radio to request immediate assistance.
Sophomore Alexis Smith also played a crucial role in the rescue effort. Not only did she apply the foot brake, but she also checked the driver’s pulse, demonstrating presence of mind in a tense moment. Reflecting on her response, Smith admitted to experiencing a surge of panic before recalling her training. “I was like, ‘What am I supposed to do?’” she shared with a local publication. “I panicked a little bit, and then I realised I had to slam the gear shifter up first.”
