Renowned Olympic gymnast Simone Biles has revealed her struggles with severe skin conditions, seborrheic dermatitis and eczema, in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE. The 29-year-old star disclosed that for years she mistook the symptoms for common dandruff, only to later discover the true nature of her issues after consulting with a dermatologist.
In a bid to increase awareness about these inflammatory skin conditions, Biles has partnered with Arcutis Biotherapeutics to launch the “Skin to Believe In” campaign. This initiative aims to inform others suffering from similar ailments about the importance of seeking professional dermatological care.

Biles shared her journey candidly, detailing the discomfort and distress she experienced while training for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics. She noted that the itchiness and flaking exacerbated during her rigorous preparation, leading her to fear that spectators might notice her condition on screen. “I was itching and flaking. I would itch so hard that I would bleed,” Biles confessed. “I realised I couldn’t live like this… I need to see someone who can give me relief.”
The athlete described the onset of her symptoms, which began a few years prior to her diagnosis. Initially, she believed her itching and flaking were mere manifestations of dandruff. “I was kind of in denial,” she admitted. “I did a lot of over-the-counter treatments, but none of it worked, and my condition worsened.” As Biles experienced increasing irritation on her scalp and body, she realised professional intervention was necessary.
Dr. Angela J. Lamb, a board-certified dermatologist, echoed the importance of discussing these conditions. She stated that many individuals delay seeking help, often exacerbating their health issues in the process. “The delay in diagnosis only makes things worse,” Dr. Lamb stated. She warned that untreated seborrheic dermatitis could lead to more severe complications, including hair loss.

Biles had initially postponed her dermatologist visit due to her demanding schedule, filled with training and competitions. However, the severity of her condition at the Olympics pushed her to take that step. “At the Olympics, I was flaking everywhere, and I was scared that someone would see it on TV… that’s why I finally went,” she explained.
Following her diagnosis, Biles began managing her conditions with specialised treatments, which have significantly improved her daily health. She uses ZORYVE foam for her seborrheic dermatitis and ZORYVE cream for her eczema. Despite her busy life, she now understands the importance of prioritising her health.
The campaign seeks to dispel common misconceptions surrounding seborrheic dermatitis, particularly the false belief that it is contagious. Dr. Lamb clarified that the condition is a chronic inflammatory issue, not an infection, reinforcing that it cannot be transmitted through shared items like combs or bedding.
Biles hopes that by sharing her personal experience, she will encourage others not to endure similar struggles in silence. “Once we know that we can’t fix every problem on our own, it’s okay to get help,” she said. “We need to raise awareness so that others can find the relief they deserve.”
Emphasising the necessity of consulting professionals, she continued, “These are the trusted experts who have dedicated their careers to treating such causes. It’s incredible to have these vital resources available.”
Despite her extraordinary achievements, including 41 major international medals, Biles remains relatable. “At the end of the day, I’m just a regular person,” she reflected. “Everyone may not compete for Team USA, but we all face challenges.” Biles acknowledged that embracing her struggles has empowered her journey.
In conclusion, Biles encourages everyone enduring skin conditions to take that crucial first step towards seeking help. “It’s easy once you do,” she concluded, reiterating the importance of making an appointment with a dermatologist. Through her campaign, Simone Biles aims to ensure that others realise they are not alone, and help is available for their health challenges.
