In the video, Kelley explained that his journey to diagnosis started with a series of rib fractures. Following these incidents, his doctor ordered a battery of blood tests, which ultimately identified the presence of multiple myeloma. “It’s rare. But I’m young, I feel healthy, and the treatments have come so far even in the past five years,” he remarked, expressing cautious optimism about his prognosis. According to research from the Mayo Clinic, the five-year survival rate for individuals diagnosed with multiple myeloma in the United States was around 64% for the years spanning from 2016 to 2022. Additionally, statistics indicate that the mortality rate associated with this cancer has been declining by approximately 3% annually from 2015 to 2024.
Kelley is a father to two young sons: Ward, aged 10, and Archer, who just celebrated his first birthday. He recounted how a close friend’s cancer battle—beginning two months prior to his own diagnosis—provided him with valuable insights, allowing him to cope better with his situation. “I feel really hopeful,” Kelley stated, emphasising the importance of communication. “Getting this stuff off your chest is so freeing and it takes the power away from it a little bit.”
