A groundbreaking new facility, Anythink Nature Library, has opened its doors in Thornton, Colorado, marking the debut of what is claimed to be the United States’ first public nature library. Launched on August 8, 2023, the library is part of a wider initiative aimed at enhancing environmental education and offering visitors a range of interactive experiences centred around nature.

Spanning an impressive 33,000 square feet, the Anythink Nature Library is located adjacent to the expansive Aylor Open Lands, which covers 140 acres of natural landscape. Set within a 15-acre campus, the library provides an array of immersive indoor and outdoor activities designed to foster a deeper connection to the environment. Among its highlights are specialized gardens, a mud exploration pit, and a one-mile hiking trail featuring a storytelling circle.
Inside, visitors are greeted by a living plant wall and a designated dark room that replicates a starry sky, alongside traditional library features like seating areas, study rooms, and computer access. The library holds a robust collection of educational resources, which include books dedicated to various aspects of nature. However, it distinguishes itself by offering an extensive range of non-traditional items available for loan, making learning more hands-on and engaging.
Mark Fink, the Executive Director of Anythink Libraries, articulated the vision behind the nature library. He noted that the facility serves as a nexus where “books, nature, science, and community come together to inspire curiosity and connection.” Fink expressed a desire for every visitor to leave with a feeling of empowerment and a strengthened bond with the natural world that encourages further exploration beyond their visit.
Community involvement played a pivotal role in the library’s establishment. The facility was developed in consultation with local residents as well as Indigenous and Native American leaders. This collaborative approach was vital in recognising the community’s desire for outdoor spaces and nature-focused activities, ensuring the library is a true reflection of local needs and aspirations.
The Anythink Nature Library also boasts an extensive array of “TryIts,” experiential kits and equipment designed to encourage exploration and learning at home. With approximately 550 items spanning 65 unique collections, the library provides opportunities for bird-watching, wildlife observation, and other nature-related activities. These resources include gear such as microscopes, weather exploration tools, gardening equipment, and kits for conservation.
In addition to its educational offerings, the library positions itself as a community hub, fostering connections among residents and sparking interest in environmental stewardship. Visitors can engage in various activities and workshops, making the space conducive for learning and communal interaction.
