In a digital age where social media plays a pivotal role in shaping consumer perceptions, floral designer Hanna Darnell is making waves on platforms like TikTok by unveiling the often-overlooked costs associated with floral arrangements. Based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Darnell is the founder of Hanna’s Roses NYC and recently showcased one of her most significant purchases yet, spending $1,625 on an impressive selection of flowers and greenery for two simultaneous events.

Darnell’s eye-catching haul included premium blooms such as orchids and anthuriums, which are known for their high price tags. Her presentation was not just about the flowers; it was an opportunity to educate her followers about the realities faced by florists. “That haul was actually for two events happening on the same day,” she explained. “I ended up buying a lot of premium blooms — orchids and anthuriums, which are incredibly costly per stem — plus a lot of greenery.”
The designer stressed that greenery also contributes significantly to floral costs, refuting the common misconception that greens are an inexpensive filler. “People assume greens are the cheap part, but they add up too,” Darnell stated, indicating that even purchasing in bulk can make it a manageable expense.

Darnell’s experience in the floral industry allows her to navigate high costs effectively, but her recent trip to the market was particularly hefty. The dual events required a substantial volume of flowers, and her choice of more extravagant stems propelled the total amount. “These were more expensive stems than average, and I think it was really the anthuriums that drove the cost up,” she shared, acknowledging that even seasoned florists can be surprised by their expenditure at the market.

The expenses incurred at the flower market provide a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes realities of floral design, showcasing how much florists invest before a single arrangement takes shape. Darnell emphasised that while wholesale prices can offer some savings, they don’t significantly reduce each stem’s cost, particularly in New York City where many varieties are imported.
“In N.Y.C., the cost of flowers can be particularly surprising,” she pointed out. “Even though we’re buying wholesale, that doesn’t make as big a difference in our cost per stem as people would expect.” Beyond the price of flowers, florists also incur costs related to sourcing, processing, transporting, and designing, not to mention the extensive creative expertise it takes to transform individual stems into a cohesive design.
Despite the high costs associated with floral arrangements, Darnell believes it is still possible to achieve an upscale appearance without breaking the bank. She advises clients to make strategic choices during the floral purchasing process, suggesting they incorporate a few costly blooms for flair while utilising more affordable flowers to create a balanced and luxurious look. “Choose a few premium blooms to give the arrangement that elevated, high-end feel, then be smart about the rest,” she said.
Drawing from years of experience, Darnell began her career in floral design during her college years, gaining industry insight whilst working at a flower shop. This foundation led her to establish Hanna’s Roses NYC, where her work encompasses everything from intimate gatherings to high-profile projects with notable brands like Shinola and OpenTable.
Through social media, Darnell connects with her audience by sharing insights and behind-the-scenes footage from her visits to the flower market. Her haul videos have garnered considerable attention, and while she acknowledges the unpredictable nature of TikTok popularity, she found that this particular video resonated with viewers due to its substantial price tag and revealing content.
As the video gained momentum, the comments highlighted viewers’ shock at the costs involved. For Darnell, this reaction was valuable, shedding light on the financial realities florists face. “It’s genuinely good to show people how expensive our costs are, so they understand why florists charge what we charge,” she asserted.
By displaying the receipt alongside the finished arrangements, Darnell aims to make an invisible aspect of the floral business more transparent. “It’s really important for people to understand the hard costs behind floral arrangements,” she reiterated. “Once you see the finished products, you realise that’s where the cost lives too.”
In an era where consumers are increasingly eager to understand the intricacies of the products they purchase, Darnell’s candid approach not only educates her followers but also fosters a greater appreciation for the art and labour that goes into floral design.
