In approximately two weeks, Dykes, accompanied by a local guide and a videographer, will navigate the wild and often unpredictable terrain of the Congo River Basin. Their expedition will commence in Nola, Central African Republic, and will see them travelling by inflatable rafts down the Sangha River towards Mossaka in the Republic of Congo. Each day, they plan to cover around 20 miles, camping by the river and relying on ration packs for sustenance, with the aim of completing their journey within a month.
The natural environment they will encounter is filled with formidable challenges and potential dangers. Dykes has already expressed concerns regarding the presence of various wild animals, which include hippos, forest elephants, and gorillas. “There are plenty of elephant corridors throughout the forest,” he notes. “We won’t be able to pitch our tent in those areas, as the elephants won’t hesitate to trample anything in their way.”
Dykes’s extensive experience as an explorer has taken him to some of the world’s most remote and hazardous locations, including the harsh outback of Northern Australia and the perilous Himalayas along the borders of Pakistan and India. He recalls a particularly harrowing experience in China, where a pack of wolves stalked him and his companions for two days after having killed a local inhabitant. He also has had encounters with bears in mountainous regions and crocodiles in Madagascar, reinforcing his preparedness for the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters.
Despite his adventures elsewhere, Dykes acknowledges that the unique fauna of the Congo presents unfamiliar challenges. While he is no stranger to dangerous wildlife, he admits, “I don’t have direct experience with some of the specific native creatures of the Congo River Basin, but I know how to prepare for the worst.”
However, it is not just the animals that pose a risk on this expedition; the region is rife with diseases that could quickly derail their journey. Dykes has highlighted malaria and dengue fever as significant threats, and he is open about his expectation of contracting a parasite during his travels: “There’s no way I’m not coming back with a parasite,” he remarked candidly.
One particularly sinister health risk that has caught Dykes off guard is river blindness, a disease caused by a parasitic worm transmitted through bites from infected blackflies that breed in rapidly flowing waterways. The World Health Organization outlines the potential symptoms, which range from itchy skin to debilitating vision issues that can lead to permanent blindness.
