As ShopRite marks its 80th anniversary, it continues to uphold its founding vision of community and family values across six states. The supermarket chain, which began in 1946 as a cooperative of eight independent grocery stores, has expanded significantly while remaining dedicated to local engagement and philanthropic initiatives.

Founded by a collective of “mom and pop” grocers, ShopRite emerged under the Wakefern Food Corp. banner, which allowed these small retailers to operate under a unified and recognisable brand. Currently, the chain spans Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, employing family-run businesses that have their own distinct charitable priorities.

More than just a grocery store, ShopRite embraces a family-first ethos. The individual store owners actively participate in their communities, supporting various local causes ranging from food banks to educational institutions. For example, the Kinsley family has owned a ShopRite in Pennsylvania since 1950 and remains committed to community service, having significantly supported organisations like The Salvation Army and local sports teams for generations.
Sustainability also forms a key part of ShopRite’s identity. Recently, the ShopRite of Brodheadsville unveiled an expansive solar array spanning 10 acres, a move designed to significantly decrease the store’s energy consumption. This initiative complements its adherence to the EPA’s GreenChill Gold standards, which promote the use of non-ozone-depleting refrigerants in its refrigeration systems.
Another notable family within the ShopRite network is the Bottino family, who have operated stores in South Jersey since 1977. In memory of their patriarch Bill Bottino, who lost his battle with cancer in 2006, they established the Bill Bottino Cancer Foundation. This foundation aims to ease the burden on families affected by cancer by covering essential costs like utilities and groceries, allowing them to focus on healing rather than financial strain.
The commitment of ShopRite to tackle food insecurity has been apparent since the establishment of its Partners in Caring programme in 1999. To date, this initiative has channelled nearly $51 million to food banks and local charities, benefiting over 2,200 organisations. Nearly $3 million is distributed each year through proceeds from specially marked products in the stores, providing crucial support to communities in need.
In recent headlines, a New Jersey ShopRite made a remarkable donation of its $30,000 lottery commission to the local food bank following a significant Mega Millions win in 2024. Richard Saker, the President and CEO of Saker ShopRite, announced that the money would be directed to Fulfill, a local food assistance organisation, reinforcing ShopRite’s ongoing pledge to support the community.
The strategic partnerships and community-focused initiatives are diverse, ranging from providing food, monetary support, to volunteer efforts. ShopRite grocery stores remain dedicated to ensuring that customers and their communities thrive, which aligns with the company’s motto: “families serving families.”
As ShopRite continues into a new decade, its commitment to philanthropy and community welfare remains firmly rooted, ensuring that the core values established by its founders will persist well into the future.
