Taylor, aged 41, received the daunting diagnosis of stage 2 triple-positive breast cancer in 2025. “It’s a chapter neither of us ever expected to face together,” she reflected. The pair, who have been friends since they were just two years old, have shared countless milestones, from preschool to their university years at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Taylor describes the bond they have cultivated over four decades as essential to her life.

Upon learning of Taylor’s diagnosis, Finkel had just relocated back to New York City. Taylor, the founder and creative director of an event planning and design business, has embarked on a rigorous treatment regime that encompasses 12 weeks of initial chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and 20 rounds of radiation. She is currently undergoing an additional chemotherapy treatment, ENHERTU, which is set to continue until December.
Finkel, who manages creative operations at RYZE Mushroom Coffee and owns CAKE RIOT, has played a crucial role in supporting Taylor. She has accompanied her friend to all of her mammogram appointments and continues to be by her side during biweekly chemotherapy sessions at the Perlmutter Cancer Center. There, Taylor has established a close relationship with her oncology nurse, Bianca, who has been a source of comfort and reassurance during this challenging time.
The emotional toll of the diagnosis has been profound, and one of the more difficult aspects for Taylor was repeatedly sharing her cancer news with friends and family. “It was incredibly hard to keep telling the same story,” she admitted. To alleviate this burden, Finkel proposed that they document the experience on social media. This led to the creation of their Instagram account, @JenAndAdrien, where they share updates, pictures, and videos of their experiences.
Initially, the intention was simply to keep others informed without the need to recount the story repeatedly. However, as the account gained followers, it evolved into a space where they could connect with others facing similar challenges. “I was looking for someone relatable in the midst of my diagnosis,” Taylor recounted. She sought reassurance that life beyond treatment could still resemble normalcy, with moments of joy and laughter interspersed amidst the severity of the situation.
Both women are committed to portraying the full spectrum of their experience, capturing the harsh realities alongside the lighter moments. “We never aimed to sugar-coat cancer,” Taylor stated. She emphasised that there is no amount of optimism that can make the experiences of chemotherapy and surgery less daunting. Their mantra has become a raw acceptance of their circumstances: “This really f—ing sucks, so let’s sit in it together, and laugh whenever we possibly can.”
Reflecting on her journey, Taylor noted that while she already appreciated the value of life, her cancer diagnosis has underscored the significance of meaningful relationships. She expressed gratitude for friends who are willing to accompany her through the toughest of times. “Adrien walked in and never left, and perhaps that is the core of my story,” she explained. While the cancer diagnosis is undeniably significant, Taylor believes that her narrative is ultimately about the strength of friendship and the power of community support.
As a mother to a five-year-old daughter named Frankie, Taylor continues to find strength not just for herself but also to model resilience for her child. “This isn’t merely a story about cancer,” she emphasised. “Cancer is the difficult challenge that has arisen in our lives; the real story revolves around friendship, family, and the individuals who help shoulder an unbearable burden.”
Through their shared narrative, Taylor and Finkel serve as a beacon of hope to others navigating similar battles. By candidly documenting their journey, they remind us all of the importance of connection and support in times of adversity.
