By the late 1980s, she was working as a prostitute, and between 1989 and 1990, she admitted to killing seven men, alleging that these acts were in self-defence against sexual assault. During the investigations that followed her arrests, Wuornos began a relationship with Tyria Moore, who would become a crucial figure in her life. It was during their time together that Moore ultimately suspected Aileen of the murders and managed to elicit confessions from her.
