A tragic incident has left a family and a community mourning the unexpected death of Paulo Brockway, who passed away during a holiday in Cyprus. The 44-year-old, who was in the country to celebrate his anniversary with fiancée Kerry Debono, fell ill on September 16 and died the following day.

Debono, originally from Cardiff, expressed her heartbreak in a GoFundMe campaign she initiated to gather support for Brockway’s funeral expenses. “He had so much to live for, and he was just gone in the blink of an eye,” she wrote. The couple had embarked on their trip with joy and anticipation, but it turned into a nightmare with Brockway’s sudden illness.
Doctors in Cyprus informed Debono that Brockway suffered a cardiac arrest prompted by an undiagnosed case of pancreatitis. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, he could not be saved. His sudden demise has left a deep emotional void in the lives of those who loved him, particularly his young son. “His loss has affected so many people who loved him, including his mum, sisters, and brother, who are all completely heartbroken,” Debono added.
The couple had been looking forward to their anniversary celebration, and Debono recalled Brockway’s enthusiasm during their trip. She revealed that he had expressed a desire to return to Cyprus for their wedding. “We had basically gone to celebrate our three-year anniversary. He said, ‘This is the place we need to get married,’” she mentioned. It is clear that they had envisioned a beautiful future together.
Without life insurance, the financial burden has now fallen on Debono, but the couple had taken out vacation insurance, which covered hospital fees and the repatriation of Brockway’s body back to Cardiff. However, in their time of grief, the couple’s family and friends are rallying to assist Debono through financial contributions to the GoFundMe initiative, which aims to help cover funeral costs.
“Any donation, no matter how small, would mean so much to us and would help us give Paulo the farewell he deserves,” she wrote on the fundraising page. The outpouring of support reflects the community’s affection for Brockway, who is remembered not only as a devoted father and partner but also as an enthusiastic individual who found joy in tackling new challenges.
Debono shared more about Brockway’s adventurous spirit, noting his passion for mountain climbing. “Over the last three years, Paulo had taken up mountain climbing, something he grew to absolutely love” she recounted, explaining that he often climbed for charity, raising funds to support worthy causes. His love for climbing provided him with a sense of purpose, and it was an integral part of his identity.
