Man Fatally Shoots Girlfriend While ‘Playing’ with Gun, Then Dies by Suicide

A tragic incident in Fairbanks, Alaska, has left two families mourning after a man fatally shot his girlfriend before taking his own life. The events unfolded on September 16, involving Landon Lowrance, 22, and CloeRae McBrayer, 21. According to local police, the shooting was described as both a tragedy and a preventable incident, prompting calls for increased awareness regarding firearm safety.

Responding to an emergency call around 9:12 p.m. on that Wednesday evening, Fairbanks Police discovered McBrayer deceased and Lowrance critically injured in a residential home. The emergency dispatcher who took the call heard a disturbance in the background and reported that the caller, a friend of Lowrance, had sought immediate assistance. Unfortunately, as police arrived on the scene, they found that the situation had escalated.

Authorities learned that Lowrance had shot McBrayer while “playing” with a revolver. It was reported that while the caller remained on the line with emergency services, Lowrance managed to secure another firearm and subsequently shot himself, leading to his hospitalisation where he later succumbed to his injuries. The friend who had called 911 has been interviewed by investigators and is not considered to be involved in the incident itself.

In the wake of the shooting, friends and family members of McBrayer have spoken fondly of her character. Amanda Hooper, her mother, depicted her daughter as the “sunshine of the family,” explaining that CloeRae was an outgoing, loving individual who was recently accepted to the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The relationship between McBrayer and Lowrance had grown serious, with plans possibly brewing for engagement.

“We had talked about it, and she seemed very happy with him,” Hooper shared, reflecting on her daughter’s relationship and her recent time spent with Lowrance, who was stationed at Fort Wainwright. “She’d tell me he was a really good guy, and I saw Landon’s family as well—they presented a good image.”

A close friend of McBrayer, Marley Walker, recounted how beautiful and supportive McBrayer was, stating that she was one of the “most amazing” friends she’d ever had. Walker’s sentiments highlight the deep love and fondness many had for McBrayer, demonstrating the grievous loss felt by her community.

Following the incident, Amanda Hooper expressed that while she was devastated by the loss of her daughter, she harbours no anger towards Landon Lowrance’s family. “It was out of their control—there was nothing they could do about it,” she said. Her pain stems from not fully understanding the circumstances surrounding her daughter’s death, but she firmly believes in the mutual affection shared between McBrayer and Lowrance.
